Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hintertux in May

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Just returned from 2.5 days skiing (out Monday morning, back last night) my third short trip to Hintertux in the last 12 months.

Conditions are excellent at the moment. It has been snowing since Monday night and the forecast has it continuing for the next week. The zero isotherm is about 1700m. All the skiing above the Tuxer Fernerhaus (2660m) is open except for the 2 runs (the Schlegeis area) over the back at the top. There are about 47kms open, including a couple of shortish blacks. Because the visibility was limited, we stuck to the pistes, so I can't comment on the availability of any off-piste.

A bit of a mixed bag weather wise, mild conditions when we arrived, with slushy lower pistes in the afternoon, but a rapid drop in temperature and constant snow meant that piste conditions were excellent when we left, with several inches of fresh snow. Visibility was variable but the sun came through at regular intervals making for some spectacular runs.

It was very, very quiet. No queues anywhere, in fact it was often the case that there was no-one else on the same lift.

Ray Zorro, what's the opening times for the lifts during the day? Does everything close soon after lunch? Just out of interest, how much did your trip cost (flights, hotel, car hire?)?

rob@rar.org.uk, the lifts were open from 8:30 to about 4:15. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the skiing was as good (if not better) in the afternoon.

Hintertux is a 2:15 (ish) drive from Salzburg and you can get some real cheap flights there with Ryanair. This time it was half term and I booked late so I paid about £75 per person (including taxes and baggage costs Mad ). I had booked an Astra, but ended up with a small BMW which was £86 for the 3 days. With the early flight we were in resort about 12:30.

Lift passes didn't seem too expensive. 2.5 days for 1 adult, 1 teenager and 1 child was £100 total.

We didn't slum it Embarassed (glad Mrs Z doesn't read this) so accommodation could have been cheaper. All three trips we have always stayed in a very comfortable 4* with huge rooms, 7 course evening meal, great indoor pool and sauna etc. This particular hotel charged €86 per person per night for half board (out of season rates) with one of my daughters getting half price.

Arno, Hintertux is the only resort that boasts 365 days skiing a year, but by August, there is much less open ( probably <10km iirc)

Martin Bell, no - unfortunately not, that is at 2100m, there were patches of snow remaining in sheltered spots, but it must have been some time since it was skiable.
