Achilles tendinitis

I’ve had lower calf pain on off for a while.
At the moment it’s definitely on! I’ve had a few runs I’ve had to limp home from. I then do stretches.

I’m a PE teacher so just keep on going and am always in trainers and active.

Went to soft tissue specialist today as worried the pain will affect skiing in a few weeks.
I couldn’t even let her touch it I was in that much pain. Felt like hot pokers being poked through. So it turns out it’s not my calf but a very bad Achilles tendinitis possible tear! She couldn’t massage today due to the intense pain but I’ve had acupuncture and the relief is immense! So I’ve got 2 more sessions. No running or jumping (does that rules out netball Eh oh! ) she couldn’t believe I have been fighting through this pain and had got this far without treatment,

Anyway 2 weeks tomorrow we ski!
I’ll stretch, ibuprofen for the swelling, no running , anything else? I have my own ski boots should I go get an orthotic for them. Any advice welcome!

I guess your achilles feels like a lumpy elastic band? Mine did anyway...

I'm a total amateur and no expert but definitely get proper orthotic foot-beds (e.g. Superfeet) to support your feet properly in everyday footwear and custom beds for ski-boots. Acupuncture will often relieve your symptoms but not the underlying cause so rest as much as possible; difficult I guess for a PE teacher!

I've had some calf / achilles issues recently and the exercise from my physio was to stand on the edge of a step, use the good leg and/or a hand-hold to come up to tip-toes, then slowly lower down on the bad leg until your foot is level with the step or even below the lip. 3x20 or similar. Got a lot better results from that than just stretching. Also, if you're doing calf stretches, adjust them to stretch different zones. Calf stretch with straight leg will generally work upper calf. Do it with a bent leg gets into the lower calf / achilles better.

"Possible" tear of your heel cord? Pain so intense it couldn't be touched?

Before you do ANY exercise involving it, you need to have an ortho look at images of it. This is a no-brainer. You definitely could make matters worse.

@Rednat5, as a few on here know I have Achillles tendinitis that flares up every now and again, and calf issues that are obviously related.

However, I have never had the pain intensity that you describe.

The only consolation that I can offer is that wearing an Alpine ski boot and piste skiing does not affect it too much as opposed to climbing when ski-touring.

As you probably know there's loads of stretching vids and the like out there, I also use an electronic massage stick that lets me work the inside on both sides rather than the tendon itself.

Thank all. It’s been fine all weekend so hopefully the acupuncture has relieved somewhat and the ibuprofen the swelling,

The day she couldn’t massage it I had been on a 4.5 hr walk up and around kinder scout Peak District , a mere 636m but the highest we’ve got Eh oh! so suspect I’d
Done too much before she got to it so was inflamed.

I’m back there this week so hopefully can let her massage now the inflammation subsided.

I’ll do the stretches , avoid runs as that’s when it’s worst. Walking seems ok running especially on roads is when it’s worst.

And I’ve binned all my old trainers! So today is new trainers for school day .

I changed to Hoka's and they really helped.

Get some gel heel lifts to put in your trainers. They help.

My son is suffering from Severs disease so gets pain in his heel and Achilles. Skiing actually helped it because his ankle was locked in the boot which took load of the Achilles.

You should get it scanned though if there is a risk of it being torn. You don't want it to fully rupture.

Have you tried putting your ski boots on, and doing up the clips? When I damaged my Achilles the forced forward lean in ski boots stretched the tendon and made it very painful. It probably took a couple of month's rest with just walking before it was ok.
