Can anybody give us advice on when is the best time to book for next year?
We are a group of 3 adults and 5 children (ages 8-10) so I don't feel we can leave it too late.
Timing will most likely be February half-term.
It'll be Europe, and happy with a big resort, likely France/Austria/Italy. We have not decided between chalet or hotel but we did half-board at a hotel this year and this worked perfectly - easy, no cooking, good buffet food which worked well with the children, ski in /ski out, bar for the evening, three rooms of which two were interconnecting rooms so no children alone at night.
The hotel worked so well that I would be tempted to book everything separately next time - always gone chalet with a tour operator pre kids - and the tour operator was shocking this time so think I could take on most of the legwork if it's cheaper.
I am worried about sorting private transfers though. And not really willing to drive.
Not keen on self catering even though it's cheaper.
We booked in late October/Early November 2021 and this felt quite late for Feb 2022. Now though feels too early because there doesn't seem to be that much choice or it's ridiculously more expensive.

As you are happy to DIY then there are some bargain flights for half term week. Easyjet released flights last week and prices still low on some routes although it does depend when your half term is as seems to vary. We got less than £100 per person return including hold bag and prices today still low. So you could get flights in the bag and then look around for accommodation to suit - I'd think a year out there will be a good choice.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@HoldingOutForSnow, if you see a deal you are happy with, no reason not to book now especially if there is a free cancellation policy, though it depends how much money (if any deposit is required) you are willing to be tied up for nearly a year.
prices and choices may differ nearer the time
we tend to drive and self cater, so apart from the Eurotunnel crossing, i have everything booked for christmas 22 and easter 23 already, including apartments in resort and overnight hotels whilst driving out and back!!

@HoldingOutForSnow, For a group it's very unusual in my experience not to get a better deal DIY.
I'd go for the flights when available and sort out the accommodation when you want, without leaving it late.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

We got the last chalet-apartment for half term Feb 23 in our hotel. Clearly most fellow occupants weren’t happy to leave it as late as 368 days before like me booked flights the day they came out. But trips with friends and any other off peak trips will be discussed after the summer holidays I expect.
