Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski maintenance

I bought a new pair of skis and wondered how often they should be waxed and often should they be edged? I've just completed a week in the Alps. Thanks

I generally wax and polish (not file) my edges every 60,000 vertical feet. I say "feet" and not "days" because one person's day is not the same as another's. I may do it sooner if there's a lot of hard pack, very slightly less if it's all fresh snow. I have my own tuning set up, which means not going though the hassle of dropping off and retrieving things. Or being unhappy with the results.

@1danderousskier, …often asked question…

I hand tune and service our skis, a course with Jon Coster was essential given the stupid number of skis I need to maintain in the family. Trouble is….it all depends.

One occasion I will need to file edges and wax bases after one day - either hard ice day which eats edges or soft clart day which rips wax off the bottom. ANSWER to your question = a couple of hours.

Next occasion we will have consistent, excellent snow for 10 days and with endless easy carving the edges will be fine and the bases excellent. ANSWER to your question = around two weeks.

So…what kind of skiing were you doing on what kind of snow?

Can anyone recommend a UK-based ski maintenance course provider? Preferably in Scotland or North of England. Closest I've found on Google is Anything Technical in Kendal.

@DidierCouch, ….if you can get to Leicester - it’s worth it - you can get brilliant tuition from Jon Coster at the Piste Office - it’s just a slightly further drive down the M1…..but I know that this is a long hike from Edinburgh…perhaps phone Jon and have a chat about who he would recommend…

@valais2, thanks, yes, Jon was my first thought but a relatively long way.

Ski tuning videos (from the US) include the Artech series:

Part 1 of 9:

and the index for these: http://youtube.com/user/wlfarrell/search?query=artech

And then there is the Q and P (quick and painless) with the late Doug Coombs:

There's a ton of tuning / maintenance videos out there. I recommend not trying to take it all on at once. Start with just waxing one season, and build over time. You don't need to attend courses. Skitalk.com has a lot of threads on tuning. It seems to be more a normal thing in the US, probably because rentals are so HORRID, we all buy our own equipment pretty soon. Perhaps the vast majority of skiers don't touch their skis at all, but forum members there are really into it.

@randyw, The Artech videos are great. I spent a whole day watching them and now have a second degree from the University of Youtube.
I also sent him a thank you email and received a reply which was nice.

I'd like to give a shout out to the Snowboard Guru (based in Seaford, Sussex) who service skis and snowboards, amongst other things. They've always done an excellent job on my skis and will pick up your equipment from your home address and deliver it back to you at a reasonable price. They cover the Brighton area. Very Happy
