Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Austria w/b 12th Dec 22

Hi Guys, I have a very sneaky opportunity to get a few days in, week beginning 11 Dec 22. We are off to Vienna for a 50th on the 8th... think I'll be leaving them on the Sunday to fly home and I'll be off to the nearest open resort via train! Result Razz

What's the best resort with a direct train journey?... so many to look at though. Don't think places like schlaming and kitz are direct though

@Gaz_H, depends on conditions, early December is often a bit too early for the Arlberg, even when the snow is reasonable a number of the lifts are likely to remain closed until the week before Christmas. You might be lucky and no problem booking at the last minute. St Anton is just about the most convenient resort by train. Ischgl is the most reliable option, train to Lundbeck then pay for a transfer, Ischgl opens the last week in November. It can be badly affected by storms early season so again wait until the last minute to book. Only issue might be the length of journey, I think about 4 & a bit hours from Vienna.

@munich_irish, you’re painting an overly negative picture of St.Anton.
Recent history shows that even in poor early seasons, it is possible to ski from St.Anton to Zürs, which tells you that all essential larger lifts are open.

It is true though that Ischgl has the better pre-season reliability. But that’s about it then…
Anyway: no need to book anything earlier than last minute. It might just as well be the case that snow is so poor everywhere, or wheather so miserable, that staying in Vienna might be the wisest thing to do

 Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Kitz usually opens early - otherwise you have the glaciers. If planned on Kaprun, then that would give Zell & Saalbach as options
12th would probably be the planned opening weekend for most resorts.

@munich_irish, Thanks Munich.

How about Obertauren.... train to Radstadt? I don't want to go too far west as I need to get back home via either Vienna or preferably Salzburg or Munich. Innsbruck isn't an option to Manchester.

@Gaz_H, If you're only doing three days then I'd say Obertauren is your best bet. As long as weather is in your favour.

@Gaz_H, in 19/20 and before Saalbach did have a published lift opening date at the end of november, though the resort thread might give you more of an idea of actually how many lifts/runs that actually equates to. Maybe not so bad if you are happy with under 100km and person made snow? The only reason I mention the resort (because it may not fulfil your practical journey requirement) is that the Rave on Snow festival (10000 attendees, allegedly) is due to start on 15.12.22. Disrupted for 2 seasons for obvious reasons it may be that the resort have more of a push than usual to have lifts/runs/bars/shops/transfer options etc running ready for those arrivals. It wouldnt be my scene but it may be that you would stay on for it...... https://raveonsnow.com/home.html
