When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skiing with a motorhome - 4x4 or not?

A question - should we aim for a 4x4 motorhome?

We drive a Land Rover Discovery and love that for driving on the snow when we go skiing.

Soon (1-2 years) we will buy a motorhome. In the winter it will be used for month+ long skiing trips. What is it like driving a two-wheel drive (I think they are all rear-wheel drive) motorhome on a skiing holiday?

There are a few 4x4 motorhomes available which I was thinking we would target, but there is much more variety available that aren't 4x4.

As long as you have good winter tyres (and chains as a backup) you should be fine. Loads of "ordinary" motorhomes in the sites I've regularly passed. Top class insulation will be far more important.

Most are FWD
Your biggest issue is needing refillable gas containers and the correct connectors for the country you end up in.
A well insulated winterised van with a double floor is what you are after.

Big issue is if 2wd then fwd or rwd.

My experience

Weight on back wheels with winters + uphill + fwd = terrifying.

Weight on back wheels with winters + uphill + rwd = traction.

And so on.

T25 4wd excellent. But not a motor home, more a mobile shack. An expensive one.
