As I inevitably end up skiing in the rain, can someone recommend me a poncho or other lightweight easily packed WATERPROOF top layer.
any help appreciated thanks

You can buy the kind of rain coats that instructors wear like these (select the "PROTECTIONS DE PLUIE" checkbox), or just get a cheap cagoule in a big size from an outdoor equipment shop in the UK.

@fuego, Since you said WATERPROOF I'll say: you still get wet, just with your own condensation. Why not kill two birds with a goretex or equivalent shell with pit zips? Then you're done and don't have to carry anything. (sorry to not directly answer your question)
@under a new name, I can't speak for @fuego but I was someone who was on record as "will never ski in the rain", but then came my children. For about 10-12 years I had to do it, and you know what? With the right gear, your toughness gets some reward with soft surfaces and no people. Also teaches your kid its not all corduroy and sunshine.

@under a new name, fair enough. The ski school at the hill in question had earned our distrust so not an option for us. As for those ponchos, apparently they work like golf umbrellas, only they fold better. Sweet!

@Scooter in Seattle, if you must ski in the rain, a loose, totally waterproof over goretex shell kist actually doesn't seem like a terrible idea ...

Hi fuego. I often ski at Les Arcs end January/early February. Often at that time of year you get dense, large flakes - sometimes quite 'sticky' rather than powdery. I bought a light rainproof hooded 'poncho' and it sure kept the snow from soaking my usual skiwear. But the condensation/sweat underneath was as bad. The fabric neeeds to be breathable, preferably insulative, and that's what escalates the cost to the £100 region, give or take. I used to have a Colombia racing version that was great - the sort you see on Eurosport as racers wait at the start in bad weather - but it was borrowed by my daughter and never returned! Spider are a good make but the modern cost is around £140. Anyone have a better recommendation?

@Chrisgump, Any kind of breathable, waterproof shell. A raincoat, essentially. If your skiwear won't stand up to a bit of weather, what exactly are you skiing in?

Ha! I've been skiing the thick end of 40 years in a lot of countries including the unique challenges of the Cairngorms. And raced in a modest way. In the sort of weather I described, a good skiing cape is best, in my opinion. Many claim to do a job, but the good ones are not that many. As a previous responder said, Spider are one, if you want to spend that sort of money. If you think differently, fine. Like Fuego, i'd be interested to hear of a 'cape' members have found works, such as Spider
