So prompted by the Austria thread can I ask the same about Italy. Genuinely hadn't even crossed my mind. Think I only use cash for a haircut these days & I rarely carry cards. Just use my phone.
TIA

My phone doesn't work everywhere (Google Pay on Android) for contactless payments in the UK (particularly McD's, where my phone never works) . But, strangely, my cards have never failed with contactless payments.
For those reasons I wouldn't dare rely 100% on my phone....

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I definitely wouldn't rely 100% on phone, always have at least a card with me. Think when abroad it's worth the extra security of carrying some cash too...but generally I'm not spending huge amounts so 50 euros fall back will do me and I can keep for the next trip if needed

Definitely can't rely on good signal off the beaten track in Italy. Nor on being near a cash machine, which can be hard to find except in banks. Yes, carry a card but also have some cash, for those times the restaurant's signal isn't good for cards.

I have found cash machines on the outside of banks in Italy.
I have to say I'm impressed with people who trust their phones at important points. The two that would make me the most nervous are boarding cards for aircraft and as Covid passes. I always try to print these out. As for using them to pay for things I cannot help but think why would you do this. A card is much lighter and easily slips into a pocket. I can carry them easily with me. Quite often I will not have a phone with me and even then there is a chance it would be out of power.
BTW what do people mean when they say "getting foreign currency at the airport" I assume they mean going to a cash machine at the destination airport and getting cash out. I realise that there is often a charge for this but the basic exchange rate remains the same. It is not a lot more expensive than other places.

Or going to the bureau de change at the departure airport, the exchange rate offered gets steadily worse the closer to the gate you go.

Card in Chalet Etoile and Bontadini. would not use my phone as even in uk cities I’m always held up with someone trying to pay by phone. I also don’t carry my phone with me much! This makes me rare I know. I always carry some cash around 100 Euros. Why not? Why not cover all bases?

Outdoor cash machines in Cervinia if needed (the "shopping centre" at the top of via Guido Rey).
The only place I've had any problem paying card/iphone is at Rifugio Theodulo - they rely on dodgy mobile phone signal for the card machine itself and wanted Swiss francs not Euros (! maybe if I had taken one step to the left it would have been different!?).

Really?! Of course they still exist, not everyone is prepared before a trip and not everyone relies on having a card they can use in a machine abroad.

For sure. Cash machines don't dispense a whole Heinz 57 varieties of currency! Most will, boringly, only give you one.

I must live a very sheltered life since whatever country I am in I simply go to the local cash machine and remove cash (though once my bank did phone my wife at home to check if it was really me getting rupees in India). The last time I did a cash to cash transaction was in Ghana in the mid 90s where they were offering a very good rate. I do confess though not noticing any exchange facilities at airports for a long time. Perhaps I just haven't been looking.
