Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Split monoski for touring?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
So, this may (mwha ha ha ha) sound odd (mwha ha ha ha, ha ha ha) ...

The instructions for my Dynafit Speed touring bindings specifically state that these are not suitable for use on monoskis.

Prima facie, that makes total sense. But in the modern world, all things are possible.

So I got to figgurin', how about one created a split monoski for touring up and (obvs) Apocalypse Snow on the down?

Has my cunning* plan** been done already?

* for slightly odd definitions of cunning

** well, not so much of a plan as maybe an aspiration?

I guess the problem would be that the split gear I've seen uses the bindings to provide the main link between the two parts, which you'd not have if you didn't need to rotate them across the split line. You'd need something to bridge that gap...?

However I was looking for an excuse to re-process these snaps from June 2021 of my mate Greg ripping a few steeps.

He actually found and garnered a cellar stock of three unused brand new 30 year old monoskis on that trip.
The main problem with old boards is that they don't have any new cleverness in them, although stuff
like taper they had anyway.

To paraphrase Jurassic Park - "They spent so much time wondering if they could, they never thought if they should" rolling eyes

1. Sawing in half shouldn't be an issue on suitable table saw.
2. Binding in an interlocking longitudinal joint, skill required but not impossible.
3. Restoring latitudinal strength, the classic "Light, Strong, Cheap" pick two.

Go for it, just make sure the aftermarth is captured on GoPro and Drone footage Toofy Grin

You'll need to Register first of course.

Probably follow the various guides for making a split board (plenty out there) but then the bindings do add a lot of rigidity you won't get from a monoski binding

Arno ...... That's awesome .
I used to take two really short cut down skis which proved useless and painful when strapped to my back on the way down. I then used snow shoes.

@Arno, I really quite like the look of those. Other than, of course, monoskis wink

@under a new name, in the flesh (but sadly not mine...):

Have been sorely tempted in the past, but haven’t pulled the trigger (yet...).

Out of curiosity what’s the allure of monoski?

It was a story/rumour I heard 2nd or 3rd hand, so I won't name the snowHead allegedly involved. As a concept, it apparently had... issues.
