Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Does anyone know any areas around the breacon beacons that can be cross country skied when there’s snowfall?

Cheers

Wherever snow lands

Typically the best bet for snow is the Central Beacons Massif, but not very friendly xcountry terrain

The law is not clear in England and Wales and even the statutory and governing bodies for access and snowsports do not seem to know the answer definitively! It isn’t mentioned in the 2001 CROW Act and may not yet have been challenged ?

The assumption seems to be that skiing (which includes snowboarding, telemark cross country and AT) is a form of access on foot and therefore legal without the landowners permission.

Ordnance survey maps show areas of open access land (as well as rights of way) and those will probably cover most of the Beacons above the fell wall.

I’ve come across this Defra document. Page 3 of this access guidance seems to (almost) definitively acknowledge skiing as an open air recreation on foot. That means skiers do enjoy a right of access on ski within access land in England and Wales. It also extends to snowboarding and presumably cross country and telemark skiing snowHead Hurray !

Technically are you on the ground when travelling on the snow!? Toofy Grin

You could travel from Hay Bluff towards Crickhowell over Waun Fach, as mentioned an OS map will show you footpaths and bridleways which should provide sufficient terrain to keep you busy in the time allowed by snow cover, which is rarely more than a few days. Unless you don't mind about your ski bases.

The footpaths can remain quite smooth along the windblown hill tops if your lucky.
