Hi all, how strict are the Swiss on the vignettes?
If we rock up 20th December can we buy the 2022 vignette, or will they force you to buy the 2021 one and then the 2022 in the new year?

@ish303, The 2022 vignette went on sale on 1st December 2021 and is valid until 31st January 2023, so 14 months in total. When you rock up on 20th December they will be selling you a 2022 vignette.

You won't have a problem, as the vignette is always valid 14 months - from 1st December to 31st January.

4o Swiss francs, can't get it cheaper anywhere. If you are not entering Switzerland on a motorway they are for sale in many filling stations close to the border (Swiss side).

@welshskier, you can- linked to shopping offers. This week in Aldi its 22chf if you spend 100 etc. but not suitable for visitors unless you plan ahead

@welshskier, fuel stations and all sorts of places do them too. Groceries and fuel tend to fall into the essentials, if it was Mont Blanc pens etc it might not be good value.

To answer the OP - very strict. I was driving through the tunnels from GVA to Bardonnex one day and a policeman on a motorbike was slowly overtaking the queue and looking at every windscreen.

@ish303 The Swiss traffic police are extremely vigilant about picking up people without a vignette. It simply isn't worth risking it for the sake of CHF 40. You can buy them at all the main border crossings without any extra charge, and as mentioned, most petrol stations and supermarkets etc. sell them. Back in August, it took less than 10 minutes to pull over into the vignette lane, and get one from the ticket-seller who was walking down the three cars in the queue. Makes it easier if you have the cash to hand.
I used to buy mine online from the like of the London Swiss Travel Centre and MySwitzerland.com. But in recent years they and others have introduced a 'handling fee' or similar which has got progressivlely bigger - to the point where for the first time, this summer, we bought at the border. Note that other online sites employ the trick of only revealing their £10-£20 handling fee at the very last minute in the ordering process.

Generally cross the border at Vallorbe and the office is open at all times to relieve you of your 40CHF. Takes 5 minutes. Recall that at times the border guards would sell them to you without the need to get out the car, can't recall if you needed cash or if they had card machines though.

@Nemisis, @LaForet, yeah I’m happy to buy one and usually have the cash ready at the border crossing as they are always there pulling people over, just didn’t want to have to buy one for 7 days of 2021! But that looks like it won’t be an issue.
For what it’s worth, when we’ve only nipped in to Switzerland for a couple of days we’ve pulled off the autoroute to avoid being stopped at the Bardonexx Duane for the vignette and then we’ve chanced it when leaving Geneva on the autoroute and never been stopped. Not that I’m condoning that of course!
