Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

What's similar to the Salomon Guns?

 Poster: A snowHead

I have a pair of Salomon Guns I've been skiing on for the past 15 years or so. They're so good that I've been hesitant to replace them. They're good in the moguls, trees, powder, and groomers, all of which I frequently ski. They aren't the greatest on ice, but they hold their own for when I have to deal with it. I have a pair of all-mountain skis I primarily use out East where there's obviously a lot more ice. I like that my Guns aren't too narrow in the middle like most all-mountains I've tried. I also like that they are twin tips as they help me on powder days. I don't use them for tricks, but I do think they perform very well in moguls. At this point I pretty much just recreationally ski with my family/friends although I'm an advanced skier who can ski any trail in the country. I just want to bring one pair of skis when I go out west (not have a powder and all-mountain) and these have worked very well for me. However, they've gotten a bit worn. I'm only 5'7/140 pounds and I have never liked really fat skis (especially outside of powder). What would be a good replacement for me?

 Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@stockstrader, Welcome to snowHeads snowHead
If twin tip isn't a deal breaker - I'd recommend looking at Scott Slight 93 or Head Kore 90

I love my K2 Poachers, better than you'd think on piste, cruisy twin tip but can carve and go pretty hard on piste, great one quiver ski. Lots of option out there tho..........

@stockstrader, for that use I bought Kastlè XX90 to do exactly as you describe, pretty close in design to your Salamon and everything I thought they'd be. Problem is I bought them NOS and mostly not available but you may find some turn up.

Currently that area in their range is FX86 just under that width and FX96 just above. Similar to the Gun in build intention and focus, great edge hold but combined with enough softness and shear range of capabilities to give a large gateway of acceptance in different snow conditions.

From those it looks like FX86 would be most of interest (but the 96 is such and accomplished ski too that it doesn't overwhelm with it's 96mm waist) or possibly a runout stock item of FX 85 /FX 95 if available. I believe these ski have that range you like.

Nordica Soul Rider 97 would fit the bill perfectly.

Thanks for the replies. I'm worried about 169 cm being just a bit too long for me at 5'7 and 140 pounds. I see the Nordica Enforcer (which comes in 165 cm) is close to the Guns in terms of specs as well. How do you think this compares to the Soul Rider? I see it's a very popular/well reviewed ski. The Guns are 122/90/115 and 15.0 @165 cm vs. 134/97/124 &14.5 @169 cm for the Soul Rider and 125.5/94/112.5 &15.5 @165 cm.

@stockstrader, IMV. You would likely be fine on a 169, for All Mountain use - especially if on a more playful ski.

I would expect the Soul Rider to be lighter and more playful and the Enforcer to be more stable/damp and maybe harder work.

@stockstrader, I'm the same weight as you and a couple of inches taller. 177 Soul Riders never felt too long for me and I reckon @clarky999, would say the next length up would be fine too. They're twintips with some tip and tail rocker, so ski quite short.

I've not been on the Enforcers so can't comment from experience for them.

 So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

@stockstrader, im 5'8'' and my poachers are 177ish, remember the amount of rocker on new skis makes the effective edge shorter and a longer ski much easier to turn than a traditional camber ski
