Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@geoffknight, sterimar is just salty water. I used a neti pot for a while, but for inexperienced people the spray nozzle of the sterimar cans is very good at achieving a better result. Also it uses sterile water and mixes the salt properly.

It can be expensive, but for occasional use it is great.

I'm never fussed about skiing alone. Will probably spend 5-6 days on my tod this winter. As a poster above puts it, cut out the faff of decision making/waiting/fannying-around and you can get a lot more skiing in!

I’ve just booked my first solo trip which I’m looking forward to. My friends aren’t really in to skiing and the one that was is now pregnant so doesn’t want to take the risk.
I’ve booked lessons for five days which will be good as it’s only third time skiing but I’m worried about loneliness at night as I’m quite shy and don’t like to make the first move!
Wish I’d heard of snow heads and the bashes before I booked!

@Rach1257, you'll love it. You pick the run, the restaurant, the timing. Yes, there will be a lonely patch or two. When that hits I like to go for a walk along the river.....there's usually a river in ski country.....and sing. Its a great way to reset and the river masks my voice so no one gets hurt!

I've done quite a lot of skiing on my own and there is one major downside I've found - you need a much bigger resort than when skiing in a group!

Indeed you need a much bigger resort. No waiting, no gathering, no time to rest... Razz

I had a 2 week solo skiing trip 4 years ago to Dolomiti Superski with my own car (and my e-reader!). Stayed in 3 hotels and visited all destinations except the sella Ronda:

From Terenten: Kronplatz, Gitschberg Jochtal, Plose - Brixen, Drei Zinnen
From Cortina: Cortina, Cinque Torri, Civetta
From Predazzo: Alpe Cermis, Alpe Lucia, Passo Rolle, San Pellegrino, San Martino, Latemar, Carezza, Pozza di Fasa

Ideal to do on your own.

Have a lot of fun!

Thank you! Hopefully get on a bash next year Eh oh!
I’m going to Rauris, Austria. I have heard it’s very good for newer skiers though a bit quieter than other areas.

I’m going out on my own for the first time this year Pre Christmas, I have so much leave to use up might as well.
The evenings are not going to be a problem as I often used to travel for work and got used to entertaining myself but I’ve never skied on my own for a day.
I’ve had the occasional hour on my own & to be honest I found myself challenging myself more and more, I was frankly knackered after an hour.
If there is snow it’s going to be interesting

Skiing alone is the best. Get to laugh at all the couples and groups ruining it for each other. Just pick a town that suits you whether you want to hang out out with people afterwards or be a bit anonymous in your solo wandering, some towns are easier for that than others.

I'm in a similar sort of position this year.

Atm. I am waiting to see how Covid and its effect on matters, pans out - so will leave it much nearer the time and see where the snow and deals are.

I will likely go with Crystal, flying from Dublin and would favour France (in particular Les Arcs) or Italy.

Do report back if book something....and if things work out, I could easily head to the same place/resort.

Prices have been shooting up, so for me, a Deal will be necessary.

BTW. Welcome to the forum. snowHead

@AL9000, thanks I think I’ll try one in 23, I’m happy doing solo this season.
@Bigtipper, I’m a touch overweight and it’s worse after I’ve had a drink, I will look at the dilator, but I have a real aversion to nasal sprays
@Yellow Snow, I’m looking at approx 7-800, roughly flight £100, transfer £80 sc accom, £250 ski hire £80, pass £230 and £80 for breakfasts, all could go up or down a touch depending on which resort I end up I , plus whatever I will spend on lunches on mountain, probably 50/50 eat out/in in the evenings and drinks.
If I can get a deal with Sunweb on accom and pass it will be a bonus.

So not much less than I am paying after all the food and drink is added in or even more if you are going to any of the big resorts

@Rob1970, @Old Fartbag, I’m still aiming for a late Jan early Feb trip, probably Sunday 23/1 or Sat 29/1, atm via Turin on the 22 for Pila or Milky way with sc Vrbo accom as there’s an easy transfer to both, or one of the Grand Massive resorts via GVA with a Sunweb sc apt, both coming in sub £800 for flights, transfer, accom, skis, pass and £100 for breakfast and some of the evening sc meal.
As I’ve said before I’m not keen to share accom atm but would be happy to meet up in resort and ski with someone, I’m 61, an on piste skier happiest on reds and blues cruising, won’t do off piste or moguls.

I too am 61 (not for much longer); not interested in sharing a room or heavy Apres; am just happy to be in the mountains, with good company - whether that's easy cruising, Off Piste, or Moguls.

I've lost all my single ski friends to child rearing and the associated costs so have holidayed alone several times over the last decade and it's been a great experience - nothing like doing something a little scary to find you not only managed it but loved it!

My first time was a single room in a catered chalet which is expensive but great as you're guaranteed dinner companions, there's no expectation that you'll ski with people but they may well offer and turn into ski buddies. You'll meet a mix of people but the great common denominator is your shared love of snow so you can't go wrong really.

I've also used the solo skiers joining groups forum on here which has provided some great company and some lasting friendships. In 2016 I took a deep breath and did a whole season solo which remains one of the best things I've ever done. I'd like to think there isn't as much stigma over this kind of thing as there used to be and I've found (I'm female and a boarder btw!) people to be overwhelmingly supportive - at least of my independence if not so much the boarding!

Not sure is this is the right thread, but we have a mate who is planning on coming out a couple of days after us, but will fly back the same day. How do solo people go about arranging transfers from the airport to the resort. He's flying into Lyon and needs to get to Meribel on a Thursday. there are no shared bus companies running that day. Any suggestions?

I used to see lots of people hitch hiking to ski resorts when I was driving around in the Alps. The closer you get the more successful you might be. Every time I tried to walk from Tignes les Boisses to Tignes Val Claret people would pull over and insist I get in. I usually was enjoying the silence, the moonlight, and the 5km walk. I usually tried to refuse, but would often be persuaded.

Hitch hiking is more commonly used in France than UK, especially in rural areas.
