Poster: A snowHead

Hi all. How do I find accommodation for a longer period (2 months) in Austria? All websites I can find are either apartments meant to be rented for a week (expensive) or apartments meant to be rented for years. Isn’t there anything in between for ski bums?

@MogulDude, there are several facebook sites for resorts and posting your needs on those might prove fruitful. Other than that the local tourist offices might be able to help...... the staff at www.saalbach.com for example have their owners on an email circulation list so if you send them a message with what you need they will send it out to a large number of people for you (the owners then contact you if they might have something suitable). I have only made those enquiries with Saalbach but I have found the equivalent sites for Flachau and St Anton tourist offices equally helpful with other questions.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@MogulDude, as an example: Skischool Lech for some years already owns a home with rooms for its instructors in the village of Dalaas, 30 minute drive. That's your 21st-century reality....

Great stuff @toyah807, thank you very much. I’ll try the offices in Kaprun and Zell am See, and continue my search in the Facebook jungle.

@Langerzug, haha yeah actually read that, that’s just crazy. Lech might be a little special though with their crazy prices set after people like Putin and gang. But guess the same goes for a lot of Swiss resorts. In St Anton we actually had really nice instructor accommodations close to town.

@MogulDude, it's very normal for ski schools and larger hotels to have their own accommodation for seasonal staff. But I assume that is not what you mean by "ski bum". Otherwise tourism offices are your best bet to be able to contact owners who may be willing to let their tourism property for longer periods. In Austria there is a clear distinction between residential properties and tourism properties.

@Mankei, there’s the option to live in the ski teacher’s house, but they tend to be pretty lively so I thought I’d give it a try and see if I can find something private. Thanks for the tip, I’ll try the tourism office.

@MogulDude, I'm checking with a friend who stays 2-3 months in Kaprun every summer. I'll let you know what I find out.

Direct messaged both of you.
It turns out they are the actual owners of the house.

Try the local tourist offices. Whilst a week or 2 is the norm, plenty of people stay for much longer, at least they do in St Anton. We stay 2 months, but I am working on convincing my other half that a season would be better.
You will however need to enquire early or be prepared to move accommodation mid-stay. Anything decent, especially at reasonable prices, fills up quickly, often with returning visitors.
