Ok so on day two of a two week trip to alta then jackson I over-rotated a lip I jumped off of on the bottom of the trail and completely separated my left shoulder (in all likelihood according to doc but did not have $ for MRI) .. sick
Anyway, I'm stuck here anyway for another 10 or so days and wanna hit the mountain so I'm thinking of having a friend stabilize my sling to my chest using gauze then duck tape (over forearm part and then again around shoulder) and was wondering if this was at all possible or just stupid.
have a nice day everyone!!

@humaniac99, welcome, and based on your first post here, congratulations on choosing a very appropriate snowHeads name.
Take care

Welcome to SHs, @humaniac99, and in response to your question I'd say it was both possible AND stupid.

chances are mountain rescue insurance will not cover you skiing with a known injury.

Having suffered a quad shoulder break a couple of years ago, which resulted in 9 screws holding it together, I would say it is a very very bad idea, you could do life changing damage.
The French wanted to cleanly cut my bone & insert new joint, it was only a Emergancy call back home to a friend that I found out that was a bad idea at my age & to get home ASAP

Does your insurance not cover necessary diagnostics and treatment?
Skiing with your injury, which sounds serious, bound up with duct tape seems to be foolish in the extreme.

@humaniac99, seriously? I don't often read what @Mr.Egg posts, but in this case he does make a valid point. Just sit back, relax, and accept that shit does happen.

May be a poseur but I'm going to reply to humaniac99 in case it's real, based on personal experience. Because even doing nothing is a very bad idea.
Nerve damage from a dislocation may be worse than that from a fracture, and if not treated correctly, permanent. That's permanent loss of mobility and possibly permanent loss of touch in the hands and arm. For the rest of your life. That means you may not be covered to drive a car or effectively not be able to steer one. And this is if you just sit there, trussed-up properly by an orthopaedic specialist.
Moreover, you must be dosed-up on serious painkillers. These will significantly affect your coordination, I would have thought. And they'll also be masking further injury if you go out and about. Let alone ski.
If you've seen an orthopaedic specialist and they've set you up properly, then do whatever it is they've recommended. If you've not seen one then you need to contact your travel insurer and get them to arrange something. If you're not insured (which is almost impossible to conceive, but ...) then you have a decision to make about how much the risk of a potentially serious permanent injury is worth against the $ it will cost.

I'm not going to make any suggestions about whether or not to go skiing. That is a personal decision for @humaniac99, but I was curious as to what the injury was and why it needs an mri as opposed to an x ray. And why indeed he (Or she) cannot get treatment.
The op mentions a separation where the ligaments are torn from the clavical and the shoulder drops. When this has happened to me the doctors in France and the UK have diagnosed it from xrays only. When shown the x ray even I could see it.
If it is a dislocation, then this is very clear on the x ray and I suspect put back in place immediately by the doctor. Iirc Lee mossop returned for the second half of a challenge cup final after dislocating his shoulder in the first half. The doctor will advise what to do.
Finally ask the doctor what you can and cannot do. Most of us here are not qualified to give medical advice.

I fractured my shoulder last December skiing and continued all season. No it wasn't sensible and it hurt a lot, but it was better than being side lined. The only difficulty I found was skiing off-piste in powder, as not being able to move my arm made balance a fair bit harder.

Hence my question re insurance. I get the feeling he/she isn't insured - which adds another level of folly!

I don't know if they are insured but in Europe, what is it 3 euro a day, why would you not! Is US insurance more expensive? My gut says yes.

Right...after a serious collision where I was cycling at speed on a green hit by a motorbike coming through on a red, I had a grade 3 RH shoulder separation (and a broken spine but that’s another story). This was treated conservatively without surgery. With surgery they would have reattached the shoulder blade by a stainless wire over the collarbone. I stated I was a climber and Ian Bayley - a top shoulder man in uk - stated that this repair could fail catastrophically during the stresses of climbing, while conservative treatment with extensive physiotherapy would be preferable. My shoulder is now fine but hypermobile but very strong. But all this took time and there’s no way I would have gone skiing with it. If you hit someone you will almost certainly be deemed liable and will be without insurance. The comments about nerve damage are important. There’s no way I would do any other than suck up the loss of skiing and start well-prescribed physio.
