Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Looking at going to the Cottonwoods (Alta, Brighton, Solitude, Snowbird) right after the big Christmas/New Years rush. On their websites it shows a ton of their trails not being open (67/168 for Snowbird for example at the time of this post). Does anyone know why so many are closed? It is bad conditions up there? Considering I want to ski mostly blacks and double blacks, should I look at somewhere else in the US that might have better conditions during early/mid January? Thanks for any insights anyone can provide

Snowbird is steep and rocky. It needs plenty of snow to cover that.
If you are used to European ‘blacks’ you should know there is much less grooming (of black runs) in North America. But I guess you’re already there.....
February/March is prime time for expert terrain.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Missing skiing those resorts , did so most Christmas since 05 ( and we live here)
Unfortunately pound to dollar hit made it so expensive plus lift pass costs.
Not often I have seen Altarnun or Snowbird with so much closed, and they have had pretty good storms this year.
Shouldn't be issues by Feb but they are limiting numbers and parking slots must be prebooked, no parking = no ski

@pistermister
, The western Rockies are very low on snow, I came from Sacramento on I80 yesterday and the mountains around Tahoe are bare on the South slopes and not much more than a 12-18" base on the Northward. Off piste is just rocks and stumps. Donner and Northstar are open and groomed.. I'm delivering in Heber City this afternoon (may even get stuck there for xmas) I'll post a snow report when I get there but overall the snowdepth everywere I've been from Wyoming southward so far has been dire appart from West of Denver and even there it's been a while since any fresh.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I believe Grand Targhee is mostly open. They’ve got a great early season record.
