When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Avalanche risk in the alps

Take care if you are crossing snowfields at altitude in the Alps over the coming days; climbing or skiing. There has been quite a bit of new snow at altitude and with the heat wave this week the snowpack is rotten - humid to the base. There have been a couple of avalanches - one a wet slab that have caused injuries over the last couple of days.

Friends were hiking from La Bérarde towards La Meije yesterday and had to cross a lot of snow from slides. I'd seen the previous day that there'd been a big one up there.
