Poster: A snowHead

We set off for France on Sunday morning and stayed in a Chambre d'Hote, just outside Epernay. A slight detour from the autoroute, but well worth it. 45 euros per room with breakfast. An evening meal with champagne is also offered (the family make their own). A very uneventful rainy journey through France until we reached the Col du Lauteret, where we followed the snowplough up, although we didn't need to put our chains on. Managed a reasonable start on the pistes at around 10am, but were restricted to the lower Monetier slopes due to high winds. After that it was a mainly sunny and warm Easter, although the snow was the best condition I have seen it at Easter (this was our 3rd Easter trip, and also the latest Easter dates). Another fall of snow freshened up the upper slopes on Easter Sunday. We skied over to the rest of the area on 3 days, the Cucumell being lovely at the top, and we managed to get the boys to slow down enough to finally get to the Pi Mai in Frejus, although it was just for a beer. We sat in blazing hot sunshine with straw hats on our heads, thoughfully provided by the bar. Finishing early as it was 22C in the valley, we skied down the Luc Alphand and onto the ski bus back, after a lovely lunch in the Bivouac, and a beer at the Cafe Soliel.
After that we remained on the Monetier side, and the hubby and teens had an off-piste lesson with Gavin from Eurekaski, which they really recommend. The top lifts (Eychauda, Yret and Cibout) all still had excellent snow conditions on our last skiing day on Tuesday. Even the piste back down to the village was still skiable if a bit soft.
Restaurants:- Pizzeria des Neiges-brilliant steaks, excellent Pizza, and what do they put in that salad dressing that makes it so addcitive?
Bellotte-A great Fondue Bourgignogne and a great welcome for the dog too.
Aquisana- a great menu, and great food, spoilt by the slow service. Arrived before 8pm, left at 11.15.
Best mountain lunch: The Bivouac du Casse at the top of the Casse du Beouf chairlift. The onion soup at the Bachas (Monetier) is gorgeous.
We also had a daytrip to Gap, where hubby raided Decathlon and bought a Camelbak thing for 15 euros, and a pair of baggy cycle shorts.

Helen Beaumont, we met some of your neighbours yesterday, Dr Phillipe and family, who said they had seen you at Easter. A lovely family and keen to meet up with you in the future. They are happy to speak English and it would be a good way to practise your French. They own a silver Audi Q7 but I don't know which apartment they own.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

chris, I think we said 'Bonjour' a couple of times. We'll probably be back over there at some point in the Summer.

Helen Beaumont, Sounds like a good trip to finish off your first season as owners - great news. Also sounds like the dog has a favourite restaurant already! (woof woof).
Oh well here's to next season

Mouth, it was excellent. Missing it like crazy. Can't wait to get back, but I need to earn some money.

Good deal on the Camlebak - even the most basic costs about £30 here. But baggy cycle shorts - oh no. A more serious fashion blunder than fluorescent one-piece ski suits.

kuwait_ian, actually now he's wearing them, they're not that bad. Better than the skin tight lycra ones.
