Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Lech vs Mayrhofen Christmas

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Looking at Christmas week in Lech or Mayrhofen.

This is for a family over 3 generations (so grandparents, plus 11 & 14yr old).

Is one more likely the other to have more snow / runs? Is one more likely to have lifts closed etc due to bad weather?

Thanks

Lech is by far more snow sure. It is also probably more expensive. It's much more sedate than Mayrhofen though with some great apres ski at the Krone, Schnegarri and Tanbergerhof. Greater ski area now linked with Warth/Schoken to the North and St Christoph, Stuben & St Anton south

Yes the place is more expensive but actually not horrendously so.... it is tempting to pay the extra for Lech.

There are other advantages (friends who could join us) to Mayrhofen.

The weather / snow sure aspects is one comparator I didn’t have.

With my Children and my Parents. Sedate suits perfectly Happy

There are still two UK tour operator run Hotels in Lech that offer incredible value for this resort. VIP Ski have the Theodul only 2 minutes walk to the lifts. Total have the Montfort right beside the beginner slopes but a bit further from the main lifts. Both offer HB, afternoon tea, and dinner including wine for one price. Very good option for Lech where eating out could be a bit pricey.

We have flights booked already, and looking for accommodation, plan to self cater rather than go out.

Lech is indeed more snow sure at resort level and generally has a very good record. The Arlberg is just about the snowiest spot in the alps. However practically all the Zillertal skiing is above the tree line and it has the glacier at Hintertux. So in a poor snow early season the Zillertal might well have the better snow. The downside is that mid winter can be pretty unpleasant above the tree line, glaciers can be be particularly grim and there are hardly any valley runs in the trees (not that there are that many tree lined pistes in the Arlberg). I would tend to go with Lech simply because it is a such a nice spot, even if there is little real snow it would be a perfect place for Christmas.

I would wait to see what happens via the lockdown etc or book cancellable accommodation.

I'm sure there won't be a rush for bookings until September.

Self catering in Lech isn't much of an option. Mostly hotels and pensions. You will be very hard pressed to find any kind of accommodation that offers the option to self cater. Looks like Mayrhofen then

But @Old Man Of Lech is right in the sense that the overall atmosphere in Lech is not very ‘self-catering’ like.
Lech is just not like the typical Austrian village.
The choice between Mayrhofen and Lech is a bit odd in that respect.

Suggest looking at the Arlberg express for transport into Lech from Zurich. https://arlbergexpress.com/de/
Plenty of flights from lots of airports and the ability to book pretty much exactly the size of transport your whole group needs means costs reasonable [especially as the transport is waiting at the airport and delivers to accomodation].

Plan to use Alps 2 Alps. Lots of points to use from last trip and been happy with their service to date.
