Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Buying my first set of skis - help!

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hey all,

Hoping you might be able to answer some questions/provide recommendations about buying my first set of skis.

I'm a frontside skiier. 95% of the time on-piste, 5% trees. Intermediate, comfy on most blues. I am just starting to get up on my edges, and I want to buy skis that will help me with that: transition from skidding to carving.

I plan on making a quick shortlist of skis and then demoing them before buying.

I am strongly considering the Nordica Navigator 85 or the Atomic Vantage 79 TI. Would love some recommendations on these skis or others that you'd recommend!

Thanks,
dpss

Personally I’d look at something like the Rossignol React series in your position.

Not familiar with the above skis you mention, but assuming the numbers are the width, I’d say they are a bit wide under foot in my opinion for a proper piste ski.

Shoot for max around 76 under foot for an all-around piste ski, and radius maybe around 14.

+1 re the width.
80+ will make it harder for you to carve, while 75-80 will be ok for trees and most of the piste conditions.

Yeah - if you must go wide(ish) then maybe test something like the head I.Titan, which seems to be a highly regarded slightly wider piste ski.

You should wait a few weeks and lots will be discounted. I had my own skis (Head - but not high performance) but the edge went on holiday a couple of years ago. So I went into the resort ski rental and got a pair of used Kastle MX78s for £70. I've used them for 3 seasons now and they remain absolutely great. When I last took them to be waxed the technician said they were the Rolls Royce of skis and that I'd got a bargain

I’ve got some Salomon Xdr 84 ti skis
Highly recommended.
Have also skied the QST skis and they are great too
(I’m obsessed with Salomon;)
