Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Buying skis - length/ waist questions

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all,

Going through the minefield of ski buying.

Looking at Zag 88s. Found them about half price so obviously tempting, but are they right?

I’m 5’11, about 66kg.

Looking for an all mountain ski, probably more on piste than off, but would like some performance in softer conditions.

The skis are 170 with an 88 waist (last ones in the shop).

Currently have some 166s with a 74 waist, had these since I was a beginner.

Too short? Fat enough/not fat enough?? Also anyone got any experience with these skis?

All opinions welcome... cheers

I'd probably say too short, especially if they're rockered but its not like you won't be able to ski them. 88 is a good width for mostly piste/bit of off.

However, as far as I'm aware, the only 88 waist ski that Zag do is the adret which is very much an ultra-light touring ski. Not something I would want to be doing a lot of piste skiing on. Is it the adret or another model?

Thanks for the reply. So they’re not the Adret version but when searching for reviews mostly those came back which was confusing.

Name is officially Zag H-88.

The next size up is 177, but they’re not in the sale. On a bit of a budget.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Don't buy short you'll regret it. Many times.

Ah ok, I didn't see that model. It's got a decent front rocker and a bit of tail rocker as well so I think thats too short for you I'm afraid.

Nah, good replies. I had a nagging doubt about the length, only 4cm longer than my current skis (which I’ve had for 7 years) and I think I’ve outgrown those.

88mm and bigger for the waist seems ok though.

Thanks all

I’ll resume the search at 175/180.

Thanks all

I'm very similar to your stats (you don't give your skiing level)....and really like Scott The Ski, as a do everything ski. It would have worked for me in a 175, but went for the 180 as it's a playful ski and I like the extra length. It can often be picked up at Glissshop cheaply.

I suspect Scott Slight would also work, in either an 83 or a 93, depending on how often you leave the piste.

Brill, just been looking on glisshop actually!

Never know my actual level but at least intermediate, I’ll ski anything on piste fine. Usually ride mostly on piste with the odd venture off (not always in great style!!).

What is your budget?

With a further 10% off, these might work:

Super helpful, thanks.

Assume you’ve bought from them before. They ok delivery wise? The extra 10% is good.

Also found the K2 Mindbender 90C which also seems good value.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Yes, I got my Scotts from them at a stupidly low price (IIRC over 60% off with free delivery). Everything was fine....though I'd always get the bindings double checked before use.
