Hi, I can't find anything recent on snowheads about Romania. Two of us are going snowboarding there for 4 days next weekend. I'm an advanced snowboarder, friend is confident intermediate. We're flying to Sibiu and we were supposed to meet up with a romanian friend taking us to the best places according to weather/snow conditions (Balea Lake, Sinaia and Poiana Brasov were mentionned), but she cant go anymore and we have now to do all the homework.
We are looking for good offpiste near slopes and proper offpiste. Small-ish budget, so will hire guide only if necessary. We have 1st night booked in Sibiu, then free to go wherever is good! Not sure yet about getting a car rental or using public transport.
Balea Lake: seems nice, from what i understand, it can be foggy and the only accommodation at the top (?) is best booked at the last minute. What's the crowd like on weekends? If staying overnight and planning 2 days there, is it reasonable to do it with safety equipment but without a guide (maybe get a guide 1st day and then do our own thing on 2nd)?
What are the other nice options near Sibiu? The other options mentioned to me are closer to Brasov, which is like a 3hr drive or train journey.
Happy to meet up with local snowheads to show us the goods!

Go to Bulgaria - Bansko - the fact it’s full of Romanians tells you everything... and it does have the best off-piste in Eastern Europe by a long country mile

That's very subjective and very debatable.

Eastern Europe has had one of its worst seasons of all time this year.
Snow is thin and temps have been hot for weeks.
Romania ski resorts are tiny, low, and mostly for beginners / intermediates.
Poiana Brasov, Romania's top resort, only has 25km of trails.
You will ski it out in one morning.
Poiana Brasov is running mostly on artificial snow this week and only ~80% open (at the peak of coldest winter).
Sinaia is higher than PB, but still has rain forecast in the next few days.
Your chances of good offpiste anywhere in Romania this year are near-zero.
Rent a car (pick a famous brand, like Sixt, not local chancers).
Do half the week in PB, and half in Sinaia.
On the upside, costs are lowish, scenery is pretty, and locals are surprisingly friendly.
Enjoy.

@Whitegold, friends on the ground have shared feedback/videos/pictures with me all winter and the conditions don't look that bad.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Onpiste is open due to fake snow.
Offpiste is near-zero.

Of course it is very debatable and subjective - however, having done Macedonia, Greece and Bulgaria, and skied locations that are well known and locations that you have no idea about I can guarantee you that when Bansko gets snow, nothing comes close to it - both in terms of vertical, breadth of terrain and last but not least, difficulty.
P.S - Georgia is not in EEurope so it doesn’t count

Please enlighten us. Always on the lookout for new destinations.
And Georgia is very much in Europe.

@cheburator, I've heard also praises about Bansko. But, it seems like a no-no during peak holidays (crowds, etc. I rarely ski in February because of that) and snow seems to be either irregular or coming late. I have yet to figure out how to make this work.

My experience of Bansko is it is full of Greeks most of whom cannot ski safely, awful snow, questionable accommodation, overcrowded, casinos and lots of "gentlemen" bars. Not my cup of tea. The local beef stew and cheap beer was good. May have changed.
Meanwhile, romania.....I met someone at ucpa who said she was going ski mountaineering there.....I'm very keen to read Cedric's trip report......
