Driving to Bourg on Friday
Done it many times via Lyon or Annecy
Just perusing the map and trying to break the motorway monotony around Lyon/ Chambery etc.
Anyone got opinions on leaving Autoroute Blanche @ J11 then D1508 via Frangy?
Weather looking benign, and Dr Google gives same journey time.

@martinperry, I did it years ago before the A42 was built. IIRC most of the drive was crawling behind an HGV. It was not pleasant. I've never attempted it since. Perhaps with the construction of the A42 it may have improved.

@martinperry, My point was that there are lots of places called Bourg (and Val) in France.
If you meant Bourg St Maurice then the route I take to anywhere in the Tarentaise is to turn off the A42 at Ambérieu-en-Bugey and take the D1504 to Chambéry.

@martinperry, go for it, I've done it a few times but its very hit and miss - if your not in a rush its a nice drive and it will make more room on the motorway past the airport.

@martinperry, did the A39 from Dijon last summer, made a nice change and seemed quieter road. The gorge bit via the D1504 is scenic. Time taken is roughly the same so the peage queues will probably be the thing that makes the most difference.

That's been one of our favourite routes over the years, distance less but time longer for average speed makes it the same. But after the distance from Calais via autoroute it makes a nice peaceful change for the driver.
Timing would be critical though dependant on day of travel. We've usually been set to arrive by the lake in Annecy about 8.0am at which it doesn't present any delay.
Also we like to waymark the sat nav to the carpark at the head of the lake on local road so it takes you from Frangy straight there through the town which can be a bit of a rabbit Warren without competent guidance and which is also the road to Albertvillle onwards. We just love that drive along the lake, it's stunning with the most turquoise water any snow caped mountains around it. Plenty of supermarkets and boulangerie there too.
Also we like the D1504 across to Chambery, but usually come back that way. Again, spectacular climb up along the lake and disappear into the tunnel to emerge into a different world. Good for supermarkets to bring nice food and drink back home too. This route is very scenic and relaxing to start your way back with, you can take the local road from Albertvillle instead of the autoroute and route through Chambery which will take you onto the (non tolled section) of the autoroute through Chambery and off again by the airport. Satnav direction to get correct local road out of Chambery is "Belly" which will give you the direction across toward Bourg en bresse, from which area you can pick up on tolled again if you wish.

Like the tip about not fiddling through Annecy - im normally pretty fried by then doing the whole drive solo, so any idiot tips gratefully received!

Thanks for this thread folks. We’re driving to Vallandry in March with an overnight stop in Lancié (little place off the A6 south of Mâcon)
The D-road route from there, picking up the D1504, adds about an hour but looks a nicer drive and will obviously save on tolls. We have plenty of time that day, even with a supermarket stop, so definitely an option.

I once planned to cut the corner from Annecy to Bourg st Maurice by using the D902 and the D925, but missed the turn off shortly before Albertville. It is a very scenic route (an unused part of the tour de France last year), but not reccomended in winter.

I'm driving to Bourg at the beginning of Easter, in a van full of stuff for our new apartment 
Would you recommend these alternative routes in a Sprinter, or should we stick to the motorways?

@Gilly76, there's no problem on these routes (not sure of @johnE, one) for your vehicle, being essentially A class roads in UK terminology. Just useful cut across routes that are relaxing to drive and give a bit of a break from autoroute boredom. Plenty of supermarkets etc if you need them either way, and of course fuel at non autoroute prices.
@martinperry, almost exactly the same as you and welcome the change in pace having travelled that far down. Jnct 11 easy to remember too, and with local route running parallel at that point, you just get through the toll barrier and 100 mtrs to road going toward Annecy. La Toillette there on the jnct if needed
