Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Day trip from Salzburg

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I have a work trip to Salzburg on weekend of 7 to 9 February. Sat 8th is a free day and was wondering about the possibility of a day trip skiing. Looking for on piste skiing, easy reds and blues. Preferably with something nice for non skiers, such as nice alpine village, snow shoeing, good views etc. Would have to be back in Salzburg for the night. Any recommendations?

Wherever you go will be extremely busy, it's the end of the semester holidays for Vienna and Lower Austria, and the beginning of semester holidays for Tirol and Salzburg, not to mention various German semester holidays. Saturday is often changeover day, so the roads and rail will be busy as well as the ski areas.

There are literally loads of ski areas within an hour of Salzburg. If you have a car, then maybe avoid the A10 motorway and head west into Tirol, somewhere like Wildschönau for Alpine charm, or SkiWelt, Lofer, St. Johann in Tirol, Steinplatte.

The nearest ski areas from Salzburg are Werfenweng, Abtenau (small) and Dachstein West. Werfenweng can easily be done with public transport, train to Werfen where there is a shuttle bus up to Werfenweng.

Direct train link to Zell am see?
According to google there's a REX (regional express train) at 07:08 from Wörgl Main Station (Salzburg) that takes 1:36, gets to Zell at 08:44.

Thanks guys. Semester holidays I assume is the same as half term in UK / France. So would have to be train as dont want to be stuck in changeover traffic. Werfenweng looks like a possibility. Although will have to hire gear - will it be silly busy in the hire shop at that time like it is in France?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Ghanny, Werfenweng would certainly be the shortest travel time (train c.45 mins, shuttle bus takes around 10 mins), and if you get there early on Saturday the hire shops should be OK.

Plus on a clear day the views from Werfenweng across the Salzach valley are pretty spectacular.

Thanks Queenie. That might be a go. I'll report back if we do go. Stupid question - do ski hire shops hire Salopettes?

@Ghanny, you can get a proper coach day excursion from Salzburg to the achterjet in Flachau. It might even be included in the cost of the lift pass.

I saw that when looking - it is included in the lift pass. Also a possibility. Thank you.

@Ghanny, avoid anything to do with travelling by road, Saturday mornings are always painful, though Flachau might not be too bad. Possibilities by train would include Leogang (part of the Saalbach Hinterglemm area, short walk to Steinbergbahn etc), closer on same line Zell am See (lifts are not far from station), closer still with more trains St Johann im Pongau (I guess you would need to get a taxi to lifts at Alpendorf, 5 mins but there might be buses, part of the Ski Amade area, good place for a days skiing), also Schladming (short walk to lift station). I would probably plump for St Johann it is the closest of all the above to Salzburg but maybe influenced by the fact it was the first place I went skiing!

Kit hire should not be an issue (make sure you have passport and credit card) but any sort of clothing unlikely.

Thanks - there is a free ski bus to Alpendorf from the train station. Is Alpendorf where the kit hire is as well as the lifts?

@Ghanny, There will be ski hire places at the lift station. Been a while since I have been there so cant comment on which one is best. The Ski Amade site lists two https://www.skiamade.com/en/Winter/Service/Ski-rentals but there is almost certainly one in the main lift station too.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

@Ghanny, Sport 2000 on the ground floor in Alpendorf is probably your best bet, right next to the bus drop off. Next to that is the ATM. A number of the restaurants on the Alpendorf side do not take cards.
