Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

3 valleys - lifts and slopes closed

a little worried that 70% of lifts and slopes seem to have been closed all this week. Any reason for it? The wind isn't to bad today 30km/h which doesn't seem strong enough to stop lifts opening. Worried as we are going on 28th December!

Is it as much as 70% all week? Certainly much less than that in Les Arcs. This week and last week some pistes and lifts remain closed simply because there are so few people in the resort that it's not necessary to open up everything, and early in the season its a good idea to hold back some slopes to keep the snow in good condition for the much busier weeks of Christmas and New Year.

As for the weather, they have reported a wind gust of 153kph in the Three Valleys this morning, and the forecast is for a strong storm coming in later in the day. It's prudent to close the link lifts early enough to make sure that people don't get stuck in the wrong valley when the wind gets to a level where lifts have to be closed down.

@donnashim, was the supposed to have actually fully opened yet?

or was it a partial opening over the weekend of the 14/15th with full opening weekend of the 21/22nd?

A lot of resorts will protect the pistes until the Christmas peak week.

Everything will be opening up very soon, although it will take a bit of time, especially on the upper slopes, after this weekend's storm. By New Year week everything will be open.

Don't know where you get 30km/h wind from - it's at least twice that today. I've just come off the hill and the only non surface lift still running in Courchevel is the La Tania gondola. This level of wind is exceptional though and 8 days is a long time in the Alps. The forecast next week is for much colder temps and a fair bit of snow. I would think the 28th is an excellent time to arrive.

BTW, tomorrow is the first scheduled day of "full" opening - they always save certain slopes for Xmas week, especially if they're low on snow. Although the base level is pretty good, there's no reserves because it's been too warm to run the cannons the last week or so. That should all change next week.

Resorts are more likely to keep runs / lifts closed when it's not busy to save money!

Also some resorts have particular runs and areas which need quite a bit of snow before they can be opened. E.g. really rocky, craggy areas with deep rocky crevasses that need to get filled in with snow.

Lifts closed in VT yesterday afternoon and all VT lifts were closed today sadly. Missed final days of skiing. Lots of snow today!
