Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The plan is to buy a new jacket.
My North Face Sedition 2 has provided many years of faithful service. It's quite heavy gore tex with a micro fleece lining that adds loads of warmth. I realised this last year when I switched to an Ortovox La Grave shell and had to uprate my mid layers to keep me comfy.
So, I'm looking for something "technical", "nice", massively overspecced for my needs, more than a shell but not too heavy and thick (maybe a soft shell is what I need? Maybe my NF jacket is a soft shell? What's the difference between soft and hard shells?
)
Thanks

Scott
do well made, no nonsense Jackets - with some models having strategically placed insulation - so lighter where you don't need it.
This place does discounted products from past years. I have bought from their Sister company Sports Outlet, which has now amalgamated:

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@vfr4
, I quite like an old Andy Kirkpatrick explanation here

However the new North Face Futurelight fabrics appear to allow sweat out like a soft-shell but be waterproof like a hardshell. I'm waiting a year to see how hardwearing it is (having been burned by Rab Neoshell wearing away within 12 months of moderate use).
