Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I'm looking out the window at falling snow adding to the 23" that fell last week on top of the 163" already there!.

Been out the door and temperature feels mild (about -2 I think). Waiting for the gondola to start up in 1 hour 14 minutes and 30 seconds - not that I'm impatient or anything Very Happy

Roger C, er, 'working our way up to it' maybe. (Did try the Milky Way yesterday, - fantastic). In fact the snow here is just superb, only done the major 'blues' so far- all seem gentle but enjoyable, several inches of powder on top of well groomed slopes. Cutting through the trees is wonderful.

The snow depths have to be seen to be believed - so here's pic of Mrs Axs and daughter #2 at the top of the Comet Express.

That's got to be a 40 foot drift!

Snowed some more last night, more fun today!

AxsMan, great pics, i have some very similar from last year!

I cant remember the run names very well but there is a single black diamond bowl that is off the right hand side of the cruisey blue to the Nevada side what is well worth a look. I think it goes off before the entrance to the seriously steep double blacks through the trees .From memory we traversed in from the top then had a lovely run down.

Mrs C and i had a great time on it, not very steep and i expect the snow there will be spot on just now!

johnboy, i really recommend the area, as well as skiing Heavenly there are loads of other resorts close by and we combined it with a trip to Mammoth. Have a look at some pics we took.... http://www.snowmediazone.com/the_zone/showgallery.php/cat/500/page/3/ppuser/530

and finally daughter #3 - note the hat!

After two days of the best skiing I have EVER experienced, I am becoming a USA convert.

So far it stacks up something like

against:
10 hours 30 flight time
Jet lag
er, that's it.

for
snow depth
no queues, anywhere, for anything
friendly and helpful resort staff
comfortable accomodation
great views
good food and plenty of choice
fast lifts
EMPTY pistes (trails)
many feet of powder in April
total absence of pushy rude gits (this may be related to the next 3 points)
not many Brits
or French
or Germans
or Dutch

That's after two days, admittedly a small sample, but definitely a positive start!

I'm in Squaw Valley (NW end Lake Tahoe) at the moment for second year in a row and he's not wrong you know. Western USA snowdepths are phenom at the moment and I thought last year was good for Spring time. I spend a fair ammount of time in Europe too (8 weeks this yr) and read with shall we say a sceptical eye of "legendary" powder days from people who have never skied N.America. Europe skiing good too but in a different way - do both!

AxsMan, thanks for the pic it looked like that lthis time last year as well! Mrs C skiied the roundabout and i started the gunbarrel but then gave up and joined the roundabout as well!

Glad to hear you're having such a good time and i'm not remotely jealous, no really, i wouldnt want to be skiing in all that powder instead of working, honest.....

Did you fly to San Fran and drive up? Where the roads clear over the top?

Dont know where you're staying but i'd recommend eating in the wok/stir fry place in the village near the base of the Heavenly Gondola. As much steak/chicken/fish/veg etc as you like cooked before your very eyes - we really enjoyed that meal!

That'd be Fire+Ice, we ate there twice 'cos it was nice (and free of mice).

AxsMan, please stop posting all these pics/information, for two reasons:
1. It's making me jealous.
2. If you keep saying good things about it, more people might go from here, and I'd prefer if we kept the place to ourselves! Laughing snowHead

Roger C, Flew into San Francisco, stayed one night, then drove up to Tahoe next day. Roads were clear (of traffic and snow) and the 190 miles took just over 3 hours.

We are staying at the Marriot 'Grand Residence' in the 'village' - very comfortable (3 bed 4 bath appartment) and right next to the gondola. Fire and Ice is right opposite and we ate there 2nd night - really enjoyed it and will go again. (no mice to be seen).

Wear The Fox Hat, Sorry! Very Happy (but may post a few more tonight Twisted Evil )

Well it's been a great couple of days, the groomers were at work overnight and most runs had a 'corduroy' stripe down the middle with wide powder borders either side - something for everyone! Very Happy

I don't know if it's deliberate or just an economy measure, but leaving half the powder un-groomed seems a very good idea to me. Ok Here's some more pix:

Olympic Run looking downhill:

and back uphill - you can see the groomed section only goes halfway across. We practically had the trail to ourselves!

The California Trail gives great views over Lake Tahoe

Had a seriously good time here Very Happy I think from now on, we will be putting the US resorts very high up our 'must visit' list. Particlularly for the easter break as there seem to be so few people here, the slopes are practically empty.

Does anyone have any strong reccomenadations for other resorts over here? We were told by a brit we met on the lift, that Mammoth is very good?

It's now 4.30 on Saturday afternoon and we have had our last session at Heavenly (and sadly our last ski of the season) Sad

The weather deteriorated a bit today, with high winds that meant several of the lifts, including the main gondola didn't open. We drove round to the California lodge base and ski the runs over there, but with it being Saturday it was relatively busy! (but not busy like the big alpine resorts, just busy for here). As an aside, the lifties were VERY organised and even though there were queues everyone seemed good humoured and friendly, no pushing or treading on skis.

It's been a great week, the snow has been tremendous and I can whole heartedly recommend the place. For beginners or intermediates it's got plenty to go at. Quite a few double diamond blacks too, but I can't say what they are like (other than they look steep and scary!).

It's off to Vegas now for a couple of days 'apres' and a day trip to the Grand Canyon. Farewell to Heavenly, as the sun sinks slowly in the west, and we drive off into the sunset. (well actually at 7.00 in the morning but who's being picky).

Epilogue -

The drive to San Francisco on Sunday Morning took 4 1/2 hours! It was snowing like a madman at Tahoe and Chains were compulsory. The first 40 miles were done at 20 - 25Mph. Missed our flight to Vegas by 10 minutes! (b*gger!).

However - United (Ted) put us on the next flight 2 hours later at no charge, didn't charge us for our 1 excess bag either - so here's a cheer for them!

We arrived at Vegas in plenty of time to check in, clean up , eat and go see Penn & Teller - brilliant. Had a great day on Monday touring the hotels/casinos and saw Tony and Tinas wedding that night - very funny show, and very involving (i.e. the actors mingle with the 'guests' - its a real hoot. Then spent a wonderful day at the Grand Canyon - fantastic contrast to Vegas.

Overall enjoyed the whole trip enormously can recommend it to any Snowhead who wants a combination of Skiing, fun and adventure.

Will post a couple more pix of Vegas and the Canyon if anyone is interested?
