Like to go to unusual resorts and heard good things about this Spanish Pyrenean ski location. Snow record good and enough challenging stuff to keep most good intermediates occupied. Well?

Yes. Super resort. We went xmas 2000, and snow hadn;t *quite* arrived. Enough to keep us busy for the week, but more would have been nice. puked it down as we were about to leave, of course !
Wouldlove to go back, but only one operator goes there and tey only do limited floghts from Manchester, so we can;t go as a group.
would definitely recommend it - ski miquel, miquelhols.co.uk

Know about ski miquel but would more than likely book own flights to Tolouse (closest airport) and hire car to drive there and pre-book accommodation. This season sounds like it was great snow-wise. Thanks for responding

Certainly did sound good. There was still snow at the beginning of may!
Would advise learning spoanish though - José Moga in the ski shop speaks english, not many others do though.

If the language thing is a considerable factor in your decision then i'll just say - They'll probably speak Catalan- totally different to the Castillian Spanish they teach everyone

Noodle, the'language thing' isn't a factor and am aware of, but not conversant with, Catalan.

Having been there, Nade : they speak spanish. It's a bit far west for Catalan. More likely to be the dialect from Zaragoza whose name escapes me, but in any case, everyone speaks spanish.
It's like the welsh : some people speak welsh and are miffed when you don;t speak it, but they all speak english.

mikehall58,
I was there over new year and had a great time. The snow was great, it didn't stop snowing for most of the time we were there. Slopes were fairly quiet once you got up the mountain and away from the ski-school.
We booked flights into Toulouse and drove down from there. It was only a couple of hours. Booked the hotel direct through the main tourist office. Very easy and with skipasses etc included within the hotel price.
Have a look at their website www.baqueira.es and you will find all the info you need on there. They are in their summer season at the moment, but there is a link to the winter section.

Cheers Steve. Looked at the site a few times already. Was the skiing challenging and varied enough?

I suppose it would depend on the snow. When we were there, there was a mass of off-piste to be tried. And as long as you make full use of the skiing area and get out to Beret and Boniagua, there should be enough there for most.

Hate to be a pedagogue (and two months late!) but the first language of the Val d'Aran is Aranese, 2nd Catalan, 3rd Castilian(or 'cristiano' if you want to really annoy the locals), 4th French, 5th English?? B/B lift pass is not cheap, but if you really love things Spanish...including ski school where the No 1 priority is to have a very good time (forget about learning anything!)......their hotel/ski packages can be reasonable.
