We skied at Kitzbuhel in January and Adam (aged 11) broke his collar bone when racing and landing on his shoulder. He's now mainly recovered, and raced last weekend, looking good. Yesterday the school took his year out on a trip, only those with enough good behavior stamps qualified. Their treat was ice skating. Tonight we leave for Davos, Adam has a list of multiple injuries
First fall put his tooth into his lower lip, second fall landed hard on his knees, today he can only hobble, third fall was forwards, he hit his chin hard and winded himself, today it hurts to breathe, cough, laugh etc. Thankfully he has an instinct that keeps his arms out of the way, so the collar bone remains intact.
I've rearranged the packing to include his DVD player, gameboy and games and the complete Artemis Fowl collection. It looks like he's going to have a few days alone in the hotel again. I think I will manage to ski without too much of a guilty conscience. Any ideas for keeping him in one piece for our Christmas trip this year?

Jane L, would roping him to a chair and fed by introveinous drip be too severe a step?

My 11 year old suffered more injuries in 20 minutes ice skating whilst in Les carroz than in a full weeks skiing!

Frosty, thanks, I really hope that by the time our coach pulls in at Davos tomorrow afternoon that he will be able to walk and laugh. Thinking back, the recovery after 2 days with the broken collar bone was amazing, I'm sure you are right, thanks for the thought.

Jane L, there's also the prospect of a week's skiing to get his recovery speeding along nicely!

Jane L, paracetamol and junior ibuprofen (if he can take them) work wonders.
May I suggest Duct taping him to the ceiling next time?

My worst-ever ski accident happened at age 13 ... so he's got that to look forward to!
Ultimately, if he's ski-mad and you'd like to see him enjoy an injury-free life, steer him towards an instructor's qualification. Instructors have low injury counts, in the main.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Jane L,
What's an Artemis Fowl collection

chaletarc, I think she's gone already. The Artemis Fowl collection is a series of books for teenagers about a teenager who was a criminal mastermind in a kid kind of way. My boys read them when they were younger.

Well I haven't been ice skating since I nearly knocked myself out falling backwards on the ice several years ago. Needless to say it hurt quite a lot.

Quite agree. Sustained colossal bruising from a fall onto the ice rink in Chamonix a few years ago. If I hadn't got back to the chalet and taken my jeans off promptly, I would have had to cut them off, such was the swelling over my hip bone, which lasted weeks. Took ages to get back to normal - worse than anything yet sustained on the ski slope. We only went skating because the snow was such rubbish; next time I'll stay in and read a book. If I ever go ice skating again I will wear the snowboarding armour and a helmet. Adam, at 11, will recover a lot quicker than I did at fifty whatever.

We're back and Adam is fine, he's still complaining his chest hurts, but after 7 days hard skiing he clearly isn't suffering much.
Sam's not so good though, he fell on our last run, right over on the Swarzeseeealp area of Klosters. He complained that his arm and knee hurt, but seemed ok so he carried on, then fell in a gully at the end of the run. He finally got out and we all skied back to Davos. We caught the coach back with his arm in a sling and visited casualty this afternoon, he's chipped a bone in his wrist, sprained the wrist as well, and damaged the elbow as he bent it too far backwards. Much to his disappointment there's no plaster, just a bandage and a sling.
Artemis Fowl didn't get a look in, any spare time was spent in the superb eau-la-la pool.
