Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

WALES 2019/20: LET'S GET READY TO TUMBLE

TUESDAY 22 OCTOBER 2019

Morning all,

It's that time of year again.

Met Office and Snow-Forecast calling for some white gold this coming weekend.

At the start of Summer I put my neck on the block and 'predicted' the first snowfall - Yr Eira Gyntaf - in the Brecon Beacons National Park would be Wednesday 30 October 2019.

Fingers crossed Mother Nature wants to get the party started earlier.

For anyone interested in making turns in Wales this winter here are some links to weather, webcams, and previous TRs.

Was up in the Central Beacons Massif last month scoping lines. Fingers crossed the steeper faces of Cribyn and Pen-y-Fan are in play this season.

Mouse555 is ready.

Are you?

16cm forecast for the Berwyns on the 12pm run. Definitely more chance of snow further north but looks like some sort of transitioning between rain/snow with very marginal temperatures. Latitude could be the difference.

Saturday looks cold and sunny. It could be one of those days where you really don't know until you go!

Met office still aren't buying the idea at all. They've got warnings for heavy rain.

It looks like there's plenty of precipitation headed our way but unfortunately the freezing level is well above the summits.

Looking cooler next week, so 30 October could still be on.

Looking cold..ish for the first half of November. Some nice precipitation spikes as well.. because cold and dry ain't no good for us!

Models always tend to revert to the average further on you go, so doesn't necessarily mean things will warm up as the month goes on. For snow at carpark level, you really want that white line dropping below the -5 isotherm. Where it is at the moment looks quite marginal for rain/snow over the tops. Snowdonia should be white again but Beacons may just miss out!

Latitude is quite a big factor because freezing levels are nearly always lower in the north.. and obviously the mountains are lower in the south!

Thanks Mike Smile We just moved to Nelson in BC (Whitewater), we'll be giving that a go for a while. If we're back and it snows I'd love to get out.

Wednesday/Thursday is looking interesting. Big area of low pressure coming in off the Atlantic and it makes slow progress. Met Office now saying snow above 700m for the Beacons, but it looks very tight with temperatures around 4-5C expected in Sennybridge. Oh the excitement snowHead

Some really nice northern blocking with some of the charts for mid November as well. Rare to get it over the arctic and scandinavia!

Unfortunately Thursday didn't materialise but looking promising for the first snowfall of the season for the Beacons on Saturday. Snowfall above 300m initially but expected to turn to rain below about 700m in the afternoon. There's plenty of good terrain above 700m in the central Beacons so that's no problem! Snow should stick around for Sunday with light winds and good visibility! I'm going to try and get up on Saturday to see what it's looking like and whether Sunday may be worth the trip for those further afield.

Similar scenario looks likely for Monday with rain pushing in from the west. Except maybe slightly milder to start so looks like most of the precipitation will be rain. Colder later so precipitation turning back to snow above 600m. Still loads of uncertainty with timings and freezing levels but next week is looking generally quite cold.

Snowdon summit looking sub zero for the next week. They've had some snow today and I think it will be piling up day to day at the top, so definitely keeping an eye on that!

Mouse555 and I started the 2019/20 Wales Skiing Season on Cadair Berwyn in the Berwyn Range.

We accessed the mountains from the Pistyll Rhaeadr car park.

Long but steady walk in on snow to get to the goods.

Upper mountain was up to knee deep.

Lower down it was about 15cm on top of heather. Difficult.

Pics and vids to follow.

There are a few places where you could do car shuttles if the roads weren't bad, but pretty much it's walk up.

SUNDAY 10 NOVEMBER 2019

OPENING DAY FOR THE 2019/20 WELSH SKI SEASON

With the Northern reaches of Powys getting the brunt of the first white storm of the Winter it was time to explore pastures new.

I met Chris (@Mouse555) at the Pistyll Rhaeadr car park at 6am, and we headed up to the summit of Cadair Berwyn under starry skies and the slowly rising sun.

The sun was shining all day, the views spread out in all directions, and the snow - knee deep in places - was fantastic.

Worth every step of the 2hr walk in and 2.5 hr drive.

A fantastic couple days spent in the Central Beacons with top to bottom riding on both days. Things have warmed up a bit but it looks like there's still some nice patches clinging on at height. Weather is supposed to be cold and sunny tomorrow so was hoping to go up early and see what's left!
