Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hotel recommendations en route home?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all,

We’re going to Flaine this Feb and I’m thinking of getting an extra day by skiing on the ‘change over day’ on the last Saturday of the holiday. The plan is to drive down from Flaine on Saturday afternoon and stay at a hotel, then drive home on Sunday morning. Has anyone got any recommendations for a hotel?

Many thanks!

@dredgey, we use the Val Moret near Troyes and just off the motorway for overnight stays on the way to and from Les Gets, and so did friends who have a place in Flaine. I think they recommended it in the first place to us years ago.

Thanks Pam, that looks fantastic. Although possibly a bit far from Flaine for us on the day. This is the sort of hotel we’re looking for but perhaps an hour or so from Flaine.

Bit further than an hour but the Ibis Budget in Maçon Creches is new and cheap with generic restaurants nearby, dead easy from motorway too. We left Val Thorens about half 4 and were in a restaurant for 8ish. Convenient for a supermarket for wine and cheese stock up on the way back too!

Thanks for the suggestion, will take a look.

Take a look at the viamichelin route planner for Flaine to Eurotunnel* and the ½-way point by driving time is between Dijon and Troyes. Coming back from the 4 Vallées, we usually stop overnight at le Val Moret. But I appreciate that by the time you're at Magnant, it's only another 4 hours and you're at Calais. However, there have been a couple of occasions when the weather's been really lousy en route both travel days, and we've been glad we were relatively close to the French coast on homecoming day.

The direct route takes you across the western Jura via Nyon (above Geneva, by the lake) then over the Jura mountains via St.Cergue to Champangole and then on to Dijon. This is going to be a very 'scenic' drive (you'll definitely need winter tyres, to be on the safe side) so it depends if this takes your fancy or not. Then you could look for somewhere along the route, perhaps just before you join the Autoroute des Anglais at Dijon. Then you'll have your longer autoroute drive on the Sunday.

@dredgey, Macon is quite convenient as it gets the short chunk of journey out of the mountains done without too laborious after ski timing. Friends stay there often but I can't remember specifically which place.

But if you search "Macon hotel France" and touch the map g-oggle brings up it'll flag all local choices with advertised prices on the map for you to choose. It's fairly quiet abound there and you'll already have passed the snow delays if they occur from big fall around the mountains near Geneva.

We are doing the same after New Year from Morillon. Our plan is to stop at the Premiere Classes in Montagnat nr Bourg en Bresses. Our experience is that 'Premier Classes' hotels are the best of the cheapo ones that we basically use as a bed, a sink and a toilet on the way to/from skiing. We haven't used this particular one so can't recommend it but it's about the right distance from Morillon for us. It means I only have to do a couple of hours drive after skiing on the Saturday but then we'll get up earlyish on the Sunday morning and be minutes from a motorway junction. The reason I picked this place was because it looks like there's a nice restaurant very close that specialises in Bresses chicken.

For anyone wanting to stay near Macon I can recommend the Ibis Macon Sud - again the hotel is best described as 'functional' but the attached restaurant is a hidden gem. It's only a small menu but everything we've ever eaten there was very well cooked and very well priced.

@dredgey, We like to ski on the final Saturday of a ski hol and have stayed in Novotel Dijon Sud (recently refurbished) and Novotel Beaune. Both have secure carparks, rooms for four (or junior suite sleeping 5 in the case of Beaune) and onsite restaurants.

Thank for all the suggestions. Higs, I've just taken your recommendation and booked Premiere Classes in Montagnat nr Bourg en Bresses for Sat 22nd Feb as it was only €29! That's great value! I was also interested to see if I could do the same thing at the start of the holiday and for the same room its €99 for Friday 14th Feb! I guess it's more popular to add a day at the start of the holiday than it is at the end!

Message me or bump this thread after Jan 6th and I'll let you know how it was (and what we thought of the restaurant over the road).

Quick review - some odd things but absolutely fine for a stop-over.
No surprise, particularly if you've looked at the map, but it's in the middle of nowhere - easy to find and easy to get to but there's nothing much there apart from the hotel. One thing that is here (on the other side of the car park) was the Casse Croute, a pizza restaurant. In fact the hotel reception was closed with a sign saying go over to Casse Croute. Even though it was closed as a pizza restaurant, it was serving as the hotel reception.
The hotel itself seemed to be newish (or at least recently refurbished) and the rooms we had were simple but clean and functional - shower was good and the bed comfortable.
Breakfast was similarly simple but good - coffee machine, orange juice, various breads, brioche and (warm) croissant, yogurts etc.
For our evening meal we crossed the roundabout and went to the chicken restaurant over the road. First and only problem here was that they had run out of chicken (which was pretty much why I'd picked Bourg-en-Bresse in the first place). The food we had was very good though but it was a bit like going all the was to Melton Mowbray for a delicious pork pie and and ending up with a tasty cheese toasty!
If nothing else it means the hotel remains on our list of places to stay to/from the Alps as I would like to go back and try the chicken one day.

@Higs, thanks for the Premiere Classe recommendation! They also have 4 bed family rooms which we need so another useful to add to my list for homeward bound stops!

Thanks for the review. Useful to know about the Pizza restaurant/reception! We'll be there in 6 weeks en route home (sadly) from the Alps but thanks to your heads up, I also found another Premierre Classe hotel just North of Geneva for the Friday night on the journey down for just €22!
