Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

what skis?

Hi there.... an experienced snowboarder, I have now turned to what I previously referred to as "the dark side" and am loving it Smile I've bought my own boots but have been using rental skis, and now happily convinced that skiing is something I want to do for a long time, I'd like to take advantage of the sales and get some skis all of my own, so I'm here to pick your knowledgeable brains...

I've done about a week in total skiing, and can ski parallel turns down reds fairly confidently although I slow up when it gets steep. I guess my snowboarding experience has helped me progress a little faster than if I were a complete novice as I don't have too much fear of the slope. I'm female in my thirties, weigh about 65-70kg and am tall at nearly 5'10. I don't have very strong legs and so don't want anything too hardcore! Ideally it would be nice to have skis that are usable in most conditions including the odd powder day, but mostly I think I will be sticking to the pistes!

Budget not really a problem, and don't have any brand preferences.

All advice welcomed!
Thank you in advance....

Welcome back. I am an ex-boarder. I'm often told I ski like a snowboarder. I sure like to ski skis that look like long snowboards. So I'd recommend some skis that will let you ski the way you used to board:

K2 MissDemeanor
K2 Phat Luvs
Volkl Queens
Volkl Aura

Not silly wide, fun, challenging, stable and generally awesome skis... Enjoy. Twisted Evil

thanks Parlor -- what about length? I know that most people tend to say you should have skis that come up to your chin/ nose etc, but that's how it used to be with snowboards until they realised that your weight was more important.

I might not be the best person to advise on length. I'm a length AND girth kinda guy. IMO Skis should still be around head height, I see no advantage (apart from laziness - advantage?) in having short skis, long skis are more stable and carve harder. At 5'10 I think you should push yourself and be skiing something around 170cm. And then I remember that not everyone gets to ski lots and lots, so if it makes you happier ski something shorter. If you're doing 3+ weeks a year or seasons go long... you'll like it in the long run.

FWIW I've only been out on the board twice this winter and snowboard on a 172. I guess I'm just trying to say I like it long.

thanks -- yes, was skiing 170cm on rentals this year and they seemed to suit me fine, certainly didn't feel like I was out of control. Many thanks for your help, will be checking out the sales tomorrow.
