Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Wengen End of Jan/Beginning Feb

Greetings fellow Snowheads.

I know that Wengen is a relatively low resort and as such it isn't the most reliable when it comes to snow conditions (although apparently snowmaking is quite extensive now) but can anybody advise on how reliable conditions are likely to be at the end of January/beginning of February? I'm strictly a corduroy cruiser so off piste is of no concern (though we all want the mountains covered in snow, it adds to the charm right? snowHead )

@skier85, although I've never been to Wengen myself I think it is far enough east for altitude anxiety to be unnecessary. Especially in the height of the season. Stop panicking and enjoy your holiday.

? Relatively low?

Wouldn’t have said so.

@under a new name, nor would I. And as we all know, altitude is just one of many aspects affecting weather, snow depth and snow quality.

Ok, perhaps I should have qualified that a little... at 1274m the village is not especially high. Though with a top piste height of 2320m nor are the local slopes. But as you say I guess it isn't solely a question of altitude.

@skier85, As a Wengen regular I can confidently say end of January/beginning of February you'll be fine for piste skiing, normally at that time of year you can ski right back to Wengen village.

End of Jan, beginning of Feb is one of the best times to be here. Snowmaking is almost 100% of pistes now, so no problems on that front.

Wengen is not low!

Yeah I realise I'm probably being a bit overcautious but it's good to know all of this snowHead

End of Jan and early Feb is peak-winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

It is the coldest and (usually) snowiest period.

You'll be fine.

I can think of a few Lauberhorn races that were looking jeapodized by snow conditions........Too much Not too little!
The race is usually held the second weekend of January.

 You know it makes sense.

I hope I'm not drifting too far off topic, but speaking of the Lauberhorn, is it an expensive cluster-f**k to avoid during the race week, or is it worth it for an ex-racer to experience? I've been to two WC races, both in Canada, and while fun they were a bit underwhelming. I hate to say it, but ski racing is another sport which is best watched on TV, especially if Bode is doing it! But I recognize that CH is not Canada, and the Lauberhorn is not Lake Louise. Thoughts? thx

Race weekend is worth a visit.

Wengen is one of the world's 3 most historic downhills.

Kitzbuehel is rowdier.

As many have stated the skiing in this area is not low lying accompanied by some of the best snow making equipment throughout
Last season skiing to Wengen was possible until the end of the season third week in April

38,000 people can’t be wrong. It’s a great weekend. The Swiss equivalent of the Superbowl.

Telford_Mike: Yeah that ain't Lake Louise! Thanks for that fun shot. It was always understood that its quite an experience and I think Super Bowl is apropos. I'm more interested to know if room rates triple, traffic is stationary, ya can't really go skiing and so forth. I make my long journey to the Alps in spring to avoid crowds and this seems like prime time. Not without reason, of course.

@Rogerdodger, I was on the train!

@Scooter in Seattle, the village is basically crazy for 3 days. Rooms rates don’t change as long as you book well in advance, but availability will be zero as the race approaches. It's actually a good week for skiing, as the village is full of athletes, media, coaches etc. The pistes are quieter than usual, particularly away from the race course. You can get surprisingly close to the racers. Here's my godson with Marcel Hirscher.

@telford_mike, very helpful. As for your godson, as we say in the States: get the hell out of here! Meaning, how cool to be shot with The Man.
