We're off this Sunday to Val Cenis but we've a problem in that Deb has broken her back! Well that's what she's telling everyone.
She's actually got a compression fracture of the T12 vertabra, whatever that is. She fell off the bouldering wall a couple of weeks ago at her climbing club, landed on her feet but then over balanced & landed flat on her jacksey, jarring her spine upwards.
She had an X-ray at the time at A&E & was told she was ok but that she'd be sore for a good few days, which she was, & to take para/ibu whatsits.
However, she's still been getting some pain in the middle of her back but before she got round to doing anything about it the Doctor called yesterday & said he wanted to see her today. The hospital had sent the X-ray to him with the diagnosis & he says she can't do owt for 6 weeks!
Our Doctor is pretty useless & is also anti-skiing (claims it's a knee wrecker) so Deb is trying to contact the hospital to see if it's ok to do a bit off tootling around the slopes. Of course, if the Doc or hospital say no then her insurance will be void if she does ski.
We were going with another couple & I've a pass out to go on my own so it looks like a mate of mine will come with me in Deb's place if I can do a last minute name change otherwise I'll have to claim on our insurance for her.
Thanks to my personal spinal nurse Linds for the advice.
So after Utah by myself & now Val Cenis it looks like it's going to be expensive later in the year & she's sitting reading a South Africa safari brochure & she's saying something about that only being "for starters" .

spyderjon, you're screwed . . . just suck it up and live with it.
As for spine injuries it's always best to take a slightly pessimistic view and commit to a progressive rehab regime that avoids tangential or shock loading and respects the body's timescale for bone regeneration.
You'll need a decent camera for the safari, talk to PG

spyderjon,
Sorry to hear this for Debs.
I have a back issue for years now and it goes like this, so if its any help...!!!
Old footie injury damaged a disc or rather rotated the pelvis somewhat.... carried on with a few lapses and then got a 'proper' physio to work out a course of action
which meant building up the muscles that had 'compensated' the injury. Now back is stable but probably 2 discs are prolapsed or crushed which aggrivates a nerve. Speciailsts say I can live with it and do what ever I want so I go skiing and play golf which he is fine about.
If I were you/Debs and you had no real specialist opinion I would probably rest up until you find out what is wrong and then try and fix it rather than risk making it worse by skiing. I have, of course, gone skiing whilst nearly crippled which I don't think helped at all....!!
It might just be a muscle spasm and a physio can help clear this but will not know of any damage. If you really want to make an effort - which I think you probaly would -throw money at a private clinic and get an opinion whether she can go skiing without causing damage.
At this stage, stay away from chriropractors.... get a good physio instead...always... IMO

spyderjon, bad luck for Debs, sorry to hear about that. Has she managed to get any ski trips in this year?

spyderjon, please give all best wishes to Debs - but also comiserations (in my opinion as a pro-skiing GP). I agree very much with what slikedges, has written above - it will heal (solidly) and she should be mobilising within the limits of the pain but should not really get involved in activities that are not controlled and may result in unexpected stresses to the back. Sorry.
Sorry for your cheque book too

I've got the exact same thing (compression fracture T12) and also twisted my pelvis and pulled my stomach muscles. Couldn't board after I had done it but within a few weeks was OK during the day no pain or anything really. However night time was a completely different matter. I would wake up every hour or so in a lot of discomfort and having a bit of difficulty breathing. a few stretches and a little walk around the house and I was fine again. Finally got round to seeing a GP, having an Xray - thats where they discovered the compression fracture and then saw a mate who is a very good oesteopath and it was him that put my pelvis straight and freed up my stomch and other muscles that had tightened too much - clearly I'm not qualified to talk about what was actually wrong with me from a posiiton if strength these are just my recollections.
But I am fine now and haven't missed any sliding.

I passed on your NZ suggestion Helen, which BTW I thought was an excellent one. Unfortunately it was met with "if you think you're going skiing again this year you can go forth & multiply", or words to that effect!

Sounds familar. I landed on my ass off a jump last year. Lots of pain so I got myself down to the docs asap. Compression fracture on L1 and L2. Season over. 12 weeks in a corset and a couple more weeks of physio. It was probably over cautious but hey I'm fine now and better safe than sorry.
If I were her I would do nothing for 3 months. It should have healed well by then and ready to roll again
