Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

is a valid question. If people need the kind of manufactured entertainment they can't find in the mountains, they should go somewhere else! If one part of a couple likes skiing, or shopping, or sitting in a tub of bodily fluids and bacteria or sailing or touring art galleries, and the other doesn't, surely separate holidays with like-minded friends is a good answer?


The skiing partner could do a Bash! Have to be quick to do the Birthday Bash, it's filling up quickly. snowHead

Your experience is rather limited, I dare say.

Downhill skiing, for all its thrill and excitement, is after all a man-made entertainment. All the lifts, piste markers, and grooming, takes away the tranquility and natural beauty. (Or at least interfere with the enjoyment of nature)

Snowshoe and cross country skiing has much less of those man made interference. Many PREFER those than flying down some groomed piste at Mach speed without taking a sideway glance of the beauty surrounding us.

Ice climbing probably fits in with the latter mindset more too. But I’m not a climber so can’t be certain.

If I have to choose between xc and downhill skiing, I’d gladly give up downhill skiing to only do xc. Fortunately I don’t need to make that choice.
