At the same time as you push down, use your hand to lift the heel piece. Check to that the heel of the boot has gone in far enough, if not, open and do it again. I normally give it a stomp just to make sure.

Dig the tails of the skis into snow at 45 deg then step in. The tail gives the necessary extra resistance.

Get your wife a set of Look TT's (Pivots), Pivot 12's and be done with it, period. Easiest to get into and out of, highest elasticity, unparalleled lateral twist/release. And in real powder, the easiest to tie a chord (surveyor's tape from), as well, easiest to get into, again.
ps: Given the unparalleled elasticity Look TT's offer, you/she can claim she is a Type ! and be secure in knowing that lowest register DIN will be more than sufficient.

Yep, that’s what we worked on plus digging the tails into the snow. She wanted to practice in a controlled manner rather than panic if she was well off-piste and in an area with potential exposure to an avalanche.
