DM, I notice your comment on getting there. In the past I've flown with Delta and United (via Chicago), and North West (via Minneapolis).
When we were in SLC recently, I met a couple of boarders from Manchester who had flown to Chicago, then down to Dallas, then over to SLC (because that was what their travel agent had recommended). They'd also paid close to ₤500 each.
Definitely worth shopping around!

One of our party did BA to Chicago, AA to SLC. It wasn't that much faster than our routing. Other chums did London-San Francisco, stayed with chums overnight there in each direction and then a short 1.5hr hop San Fran -Salt Lake. That actually seemend quite appealing.
Our route back was better as the Houston layover was nominally only 1.7 hrs and the Houston-LGW sector only 8hrs 45 mins. Bumpy all the way though, not that that's anyone's fault.

Nobody I know likes Houston as a gateway.... in fact they avoid it like the plague.... I'd have thought Cicinnatti would be ok for Delta. Or Chicago sounds ok

JT, I can imagine why they don't. I've been through it (ugh) 6 times in the last 2 years. Not to be recommended.

We went through Cincinnatti en-route to SLC with Delta.
Delta were a fairly crap airline, but Cincinnatti was very hassle free as a gateway/change planes.

Alta actually has really nice intermediate terrain. Groomed intermediate runs off every lift. Do note the groomed blues can get pretty bumpy on a powder day. The intermediate terrain is not real extensive so if you're the kind of person who wants to ski a different trail every run, it won't keep you occupied more than a day or two. Alta also offers some very gentle beginner terrain. The layout of Alta makes it possible to easily pick your preferred degree of dificulty. Depending on snow conditions, you can often venture off the blues into bits of fresh powder or bumps without going far from where you can easily get back onto the groomed terrain. Also note that there are no safety bars on any lifts. Deer Valley would offer a much more refined experience. The Canyons also offers abundant intermediate cruising terrain. Not much nightlife up at Alta/Snowbird, but the skiing is pretty magical.
