Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski rental shops

Hi all...Have any one got any real recommendations for ski rental shops? I am going to Arcs 1800 and I am finding it difficult to find any useful information regarding the quality of product and service that the various shops offer. What I don't understand is, do all Skiset (example) shops offer the same equipment? They are all individual shops but are the rentals managed by example Skiset?

Skiset is just a marketing/booking organisation for independent shops, so they'll all be different. You'll possibly get a better deal if you can contact the shop directly.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I'm off to Arc 1800 this Saturday and have pre-booked skis and snowboard with SkiSet in the Hotel Du Golf where I am staying, for ease. They offer equipment in ranges/prices from beginners gear through to the latest top end kit, pre-booking means they have time to reserve what you want, I suspect that they 'pool' rental kit between nearby branches and get it in when reserved. I've gone for premium skis (and a beginner snowboard for my lad), hopefully they won't try and fob me off with lesser kit as their ranges are in full view on their website.

Agreed @martinm, : skiset just take a rake-off and squeeze the margins of the shops so they can't afford to give you as good gear/service as they otherwise would.
Worse, if you have any problem with the booking, it's often out of the hands of the shop so rather than the guy you're talking to to saying, "No problem, we fix like this", you get some telephone operator far away in the skiset office quoting terms and conditions at you as they know you're on holiday and you're not going to waste too much of it over 50-100€.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

It does seem a bit of racket. The -50% off savings numbers that get quoted on the internet make you think you should book way in advance to get a good deal. The one time I walked in off the street into the nearest likely looking shop I don't remember getting raked over. The "we are staying at the X" discount kicked in. Not sure there was much difference.

The one thing I would say is to have a really good idea of what you want to rent - type, size etc so you can guide the conversation.
