Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Transfer from Sion airport

Hi,
We have booked a very last minute half term ski holiday to Les Houches, near Chamonix. We are flying into Sion Airport and it seems impossible to find a taxi company who will travel to Les Houches (1.25 hours drive). There does not appear to be any car hire options either. Anyone got any ideas on what we can do? There will be 10 of us - 4 adults and 6 kids so the journey needs to be as easy as possible. Thanks

Train to Geneva airport and then taxi , or pray for bad weather and hope the plane get diverted .
Or cancel Les Houches and go to one of the wonderful ski resorts in the Val d’Anniviers 30 mins from Sion Airport .

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

There’s a train from Martigny to Chamonix. Martingy is a short train ride from Sion. The train journey is truly spectacular.

Take a look at the Swiss Railway timetable at www.sbb.ch/en - from «Sion, Aéroport» to «Chamonix» : as mentioned, the rail journey from Sion to Chamonix should be spectacular in the daytime. As you land you will be flying past Crans-Montana, Verbier, Nendaz, the Val D'annivers and around 30 other resorts that would be only a half hour or so from the airport. However, if your Chamonix accomodation is now fixed, you should still enjoy the ride there. About a 10-minute bus from the airport to the station and about 2 hours, changing at Martigny and Vallorcine.

Anyone who is visiting the Valais locations: Verbier, Nendaz, Val d’Annivers, Crans-Montana, Ovronnaz etc. They’re 30 mins by road from Sion as opposed to 1-1/2 to 2 hours from Geneva. Trouble with Sion was it was a shared military runway and they didn’t have the poor-visibility radar etc. The military left this year so the hope is that with investment it can offer slots to scheduled carriers. It already has flights with Swiss and charters in the peak winter weeks. A lot of private jets now go there in preference to GVA because Sion is nice and small, soveasier to transit.
