Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

4 people are feared taken by a large avalanche in Northern Norway. Tracks have been observed into a large 300 wide and 600 m long avalanche from a helicopter. Conditions have been too difficult for searching through the night. The area is popular for backcountry activities but avalanche prone and the terrain is steep.

Two people have died in two seperate avalanches in Switzerland this week. With all the new snow in the Eastern Alps the last week with high winds, the situation is critical when it comes to avalanches. The road in to Saalbach has been closed due to avalanche danger. Stay safe

Two experienced ski tourers went missing on the weekend in Lower Austria. They were on their way to a hut that was at an altitude under 1100m and the ski tour is seen as a low risk tour.
They were not found yesterday and the search will restart again this morning.

Rough Translation = In Liezen a group of 12 tourists didn't want to accept that the road was closed due to avalanche risk and moved the roadblock to the side. They then tried to depart along the closed road and an avalanche quickly buried the 3 cars. The emergency services then dug the tourists out which put the emergency services under serious risk.

3 people have died in Vorarlberg over the weekend, 2 from avalanches and 1 from a fall into deep snow with her head.

And in upper Bavaria, A 20-year-old woman died Saturday after she was buried by an avalanche on the Teisenberg mountain range in Upper Bavaria, near the Austrian border.

https://www.thelocal.de/20190107/germany-snowfall-alert

The avalanche situation in the Eastern Alps will most likely not improve over the week. Contrary, some areas in Austria might see a level 5 situation on Wednesday. Going off-piste above the tree line at the moment is dangerous.

Stay safe!

@stanton, WOW !

Some areas in Austria reached level 5 today. Today will again see lots of new snow before some less intense days. Another strong precipitation episode on Sunday/Monday. After that episode, we might finally see some stabilization of the weather which might improve the avalanche situation although it probably will take some time for good stabilization of the snowpack. Even if the prognosis for next week is uncertain, things might improve after the episode in the beginning of next week.

Sad news from St Anton this evening. There has been a deadly accident in this afternoon. A 16 year old skied with his father, mother and brother and was taken by the avalanche. He unfortunatly died. The others remained unhurt.

So, we've had no snow here for the last 3 weeks, avalanche risk 1, but what bothers me is when (if!) the snow arrives, it's going to be falling on a cold, hard, wind-polished base and I don't see any way a bond can form? We and others will be desperate to get out and shred, but surely this will mean a permanent, very weak bond in the snow pack for the rest of the season.........
Any thoughts?

I am no expert but maybe and sadly, the safest bond may be a period of warming and or rain closely followed by snow?

All depends on what sort of temperature it is when the snow falls and how warm or cold the base is when it falls. You could have blizzards with high winds or snow falling around freezing point and anything in between. The wind will also be a factor in itself.

Two friends died in an avalanche in Bansko on Friday gone. A group of 4 very experienced off-piste snowboard riders were going through a forest, when the avalanche was triggered. The area wasn't known as an avalanche black spot. As a matter of fact we did multiple descents in the very place in April 2018 and is normally considered safe due to the presence of pine trees, some of which are hundreds of years old.

The two riders were both equipped with the latest ABS backpacks, which were deployed. Sadly, such was the force of the avalanche and the multiple impacts in trees that when recovered, the ABSs were found ripped off their bodies, higher up the slope...

@cheburator, again tragic news, and must have been brutal for them.

As someone who was caught in a slide a few years ago skiing what I thought was a safe line in the forest I sympathise.

Though in hindsight maybe at the time I should have thought why are these glades / open spaces between the trees there?

Just that in the trees maybe you switch off and think you are safe?

I know I did and will try not to make the same mistake again.

US guides, who do a lot of treeline skiing, don't tend to use ABS in wooded areas as you tend to travel further and faster with the slide leading to a higher risk of trauma... something to consider for tree skiers.

A piste controller has been killed by an avalanche in Champoussin in Valais, which is part of the Portes du Soleil area. The victim was 24 years old. Another piste controller was also swept but dug himself out. Thoughts to his family and respect to the avalanche controlers who are working in sometimes dangerous conditions.
