Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Black Crows Orbs 183cm

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Just back from Champoluc and I took with me my new Black Crows Orbs so I thought Id give you my thoughts. I bought them for a ridiculous price in the Summer and they are exactly the same as the 18/19 model.
I'm 6ft Tall Weigh 100kg Im reasonably fit upper intermediate level skier. I had a brief chat with Black Crows and they recommended the 183cms
I bought these as I wanted a good piste ski with a bit of float for off the side (they're 90mm under foot). They certainly ticked the boxes and dealt with firm pistes well and carve nicely without fuss despite them being 18 m radius and are reasonably quick edge to edge. The fresh snow on piste and down the side gave some nice float and they are a good compromise. They like to go fast on firm pistes and are very stable and confidence inspiring with no chatter, similarly they are nice in soft snow. Not so good with moguls as I found them hard work and a little demanding as they are fairly stiff.
Well made skis with great graphics I've got Salomon Warden 13 bindings on mine. They remind me in a way of some K2 Apache Recons I used to have but much lighter and more forgiving but have the same sense of purpose and inspire confidence all over the mountain.
Hope this helps someone.

Toying with these (or maybe freebird) or whitedots, and shifts... How were they in icy couloirs and technical?

Icy Couloirs aren't my stuff and the Orbs are really classed as a 'resort 'ski so might not be what you are looking for

I was under the impression that they were an all rounder that was capable of touring (esp the freebird)? I don't hunt out couloirs but a ski that works there is a bonus...

Review off glisshop:

Quote:
The Orb is the go-to option for the reckless all-rounders. The ski grips on hard snow as much as it floats on pow. Its powerful tip busts through the crud with a ridiculous ease and delivers a satisfying breaking power. Its 91mm waist offers support and float on soft snow and keeps the ski planing with the tips rising above surface. The titanal reinforcements ensure added stability and grip when the speed gets cranked up making the ski a fantastic performer for both frontside and backside of the mountain.

Been toying with these, along the Green ones. Think Green may win having had a go on a pair.

@Thomasski, I have the Whitedot Directors CL, they tick ALL the boxes! Try a pair if you can.
A dream to tour on, they are so light and manouverable, they handle literally everything you can throw at them, ice, hardpack pistes, deep pow, moguls and crud. I am a fast skiier on piste, they are rock solid there too.

I absolutely love these skis, the only time I take out my other off piste skis, Atomic Access is when the powder is getting heavy but thats mainly due to the poor physical strength of my legs rolling eyes

@Thomasski, have a look at Ross Hewitt’s blog - I’m fairly sure he’s written about them...and he skis some pretty steep things.

@Inboard, Found it, brief but very interesting... Might have to seek out a test ride in VT if possible... Thanks for the pointer!

@Kooky, Yes these are on the research list, would like to have a go on these too...
