Given that both would probably have been on VFR, it’s a strange crash. Also, the fact that they landed metres apart would indicate either the crash was a very low level, or they were flying in the same direction.

It's very unlucky. We've skied San Bernado a number of times and saw a chopper once, but no planes

Too early to say of course, but ... having flown a lot around mountains it's easy to see how you can get into trouble flying low in the mountains.
In BC they carve the space up into tenures and each has one operator who effectively controls the air space.
Each tenure operator has operational procedures to reduce risk, plus overall "air traffic control".
Even so, it's scary when the visibility's at the legal minimum if they're forced to have multiple machines in one area.
Mountains feel huge when you're standing on them alone, but if you're flying around heading for a handful of designated landing zones they feel quite a lot smaller..

Not a cloud in the sky today, the only wind was blowing throug the pass.
I've seen a light aircraft a few times over the last couple of days, unusual design with a deep fuselage probably flying 200m or more above peaks There hasn't been a lot of helo ops.

Very sad news and I hope all those that went that way from La Rosiere or Les Arcs are also safe. There are many trips to La Thuile from here for Heli skiing and people forget that it is only just across the valley from us. My thought are with everyone that was involved.

Looks bad.
Possibly, pilot error. The skies were likely empty.

More detail here https://www.tgcom24.mediaset.it/cronaca/valle-d-aosta/la-thuile-incidente-tra-un-elicottero-e-un-aereo-da-turismo-sul-rutor-cinque-morti_3187859-201902a.shtml
In summary: the light plane was flying from Megeve and crossed the border which wasn't on the flight plan, it may have hit the helo as it lifted off from the glacier. "The victims are the helicopter pilot Maurizio Scarpelli, aged 53, a Tuscan, the 49-year-old mountain guide Frank Henssler. The other three deceased passengers have not yet been identified. With them there was a sixth person left wounded. On the plane there were a pilot instructor and two French pupils, one of them wounded and two missing."
The first helicopter took off from the helo pad a minute ago but I can see low cloud over the glacier area at present.
edit search helo back after 5 minutes, just lifted off again.

Very sad. There was a lot of heli activity in Aosta - the hospital here was put on high alert, apparently. We were touring above Valgrisenche the other day and there were plenty of heliski ops going on over towards the glacier plus a light single engined aircraft. Speculation but more likely to have collided as the heli was landing - taking off it would only have the pilot aboard at the summit of the glacier.

Well that obviates the need for an expensive investigation then, doesn't it!

You know it makes sense.

They just bought down what looked like half of the helo on an underslung strop.

Google translate suggested the illegality may have been in the border crossing.
Whatever, there must be some protocols for avoiding collisions in places like that.
It was a Eurocopter AS 350B3 Ecureuil (an A-Star in North America) https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/wiki.php?id=221120.
That's pretty much the standard small-group heli-ski machine.
That summary says it was taking off, which is likely as it was full.
They're fairly powerful machines, but they don't usually take off straight up - they like to can get some translational lift before ascending.
Landing or even flying anywhere near a heli without having radio contact sounds like a bad idea.

The only real protocols are 'see and avoid'. But with a strong sun, reflected by snow that's easier said than done, especially if you canopy is getting on and a bit scratched.
