Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

value option for Austria newbie

Hi there ... we fancy a long weekend in Austria, having never been before.
We have been used to the great value catered chalets from Mountain Sun and Silver Ski in the past.
MS are great for shorter breaks and transfers all sorted for you, I don't suppose anything similar is available in Austria but any suggestions where to go without spending a bomb would be much appreciated snowHead
Reasonable skiers, mainly on piste, not bothered about apres.

Generally we've found flying to Munich to be the cheapest option, and it has more flight options than Innsbruck or Salzburg. Rent a car and head south. Loads of places within a couple of hours drive, and with a late flight back you can ski all day on your last day. E.g. Kitzbuehel, Zillertal, Alpach, Saalbach and many more are easily reachable. Stay outside a major resort to find cheaper accommodation. We stayed in Koessen recently, very cheap, very quiet. There's a small hill there but bigger resorts are easy to get to by car.

PS Only looking for a long weekend e.g. Thursday evening to Monday, Haus Susanne appears to be for week long holidays.
PPS Vegetarian - probably hence the reason for avoiding Austria in the past, worried might be force fed cheese every day!

Kaiserschmarrn is your friend. Has most of the food groups covered, well the stodge and fruit ones anyway!

@simonx, we are at Haus Susanne at the moment and although we are Saturday to Saturday to fit in with our other travel plans I think they are quite flexible here.

The vegetarian thing is much improved in recent years, unlikely you will find a place where the non meat option is a choice of either Käsespätzle or Kaiserschmarrn (cheesy pasta or chopped up pancake).

Catered chalets are not common is Austria, certainly not for long weekends. However most hotels do half board so should be possible to find something fairly similar.

Given you are SE London you might want to check the Swiss flights to Zürich from London City, depending on when you go they might not be as expensive as you think and a lot less hassle than Stansted or even Gatwick. From Zürich it is easy to get the train to various resorts in Western Austria, eg Montafon, Arlberg, Serfaus / Fiss.

If you go the Salzburg, as noted above, plenty of places nearby too.

I dont think Munich so ideal for a long weekend, there are a good number of flights but in practical terms it does mean hiring a car. Given the roadworks on the Munich ring road currently (often big queues northbound until around 20:00) you would need to leave plenty of time on the way back.

Soll / Skiwelt are is pretty accessible by train from Munich isn’t it, approx 2 hrs to allow a taxi at the Austria end? Not much longer to train straight into kitzbuhel etc.
