@Roscoe, when our children [3 of them] were young we used to go to catered chalets with Crystal which worked for us. The eldest two went to ski school [ESF] in the morning, the chalet nannies collected them, gave them lunch & entertained them in the afternoon they would have been aged 4 & 6 when we first took them.
Later in the week we would collect them early afternoon & take them skiing with us, fantastic experiences, it's what memories are made of.
Our youngest daughter aged 8 months went to a creche facility for the first 3 years until she was old enough to join ESF lessons, and for whats it's worth we have nothing but praise for ESF, they were great with our kids, perhaps things have changed as this would have beenaround 2000 
We switched from using Crystal around 2012 due to the sheer cost of five of us flying, last holiday was @ The Diva, Tignes Le Lac @ Feb half term & the cost was unbelievable 
So the following year we self catered & drove, booked a 2 bedroom apartment immediately behind the Diva [on the piste] whilst our friends and their families did the Crystal trip as previous year, we pretty much halved our costs and the kids absolutely loved it as did we.
Not looked back since, solo would always fly, family would always drive.
We make the actual journey part of the holiday experience, always book hotel & hit resort 1st thing Saturday am, therefore generally get seven days skiing in - bonus.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I appreciate that we will have to go through some painful (and expensive) years to get to the point of all 5 of us skiing as a family, but can't think if a better time to spend/share with them!
The cost of going during the school holidays is astronomical but, as you mentioned, its all about making memories that last a life time! Money comes and goes and you cant take it with you!

So, for the DIY option, we're looking at the Bellecote Residence. Does anyone have any 1st hand experience of this hotel/apartment?? Tripadvisor seems to suggest the accommodation is a bit tired, but spacious and very centrally located with ski in ski out. Only major downside, and its a big one with a 1 year old, is that there is a night club very close and music can be heard until the wee small hours!

@Roscoe, I know you said you'd decided on La Plagne, but to throw a spanner in the works, we used this company many times with young kids, they were superb and were very flexible about half/full/3/4 days etc, and a few times the childcare person met us at the top of the bubble lift so our youngest could play in the snow. They also did child meals earlier than the adults and we had a number of relaxing holidays with them over Easter for many years.....
