Hi all, I am contemplating buying my first pair of ski’s I’m looking at piste only intermediate standard skis at a reasonable price and struggling to find enough relevant reviews of the budget end of the market. I’ve read reviews on proskilab and any other bits I can find but not sure how much difference there is between different models ie Dynastar speedzone 6 and 7 other than approx £120. Anyone had any good buys and willing to share their experience I’d be very grateful. Looking in the 163cm/ 167cm range. Happy to buy used if I could find something suitable but I’m finding it even more difficult to judge past seasons skis v new skis.

my advise would be go test some out, Ellis Brigham Castleford have demo skis to try im sure other places do similar. A lot of it boils down to personal preference tbh. I only bought my own skis a couple years ago and like you was only interested in a pure piste ski. When i tried various one out it came down to:
Head Supershape Magnums
or
The Head Supershape iTitans.
In the end i went for the latter. If budget doesn't allow for new then you picked up last seasons or ones that a few years old on ebay (example my i.titans https://ebay.us/6rrogU)

@Jfom, that’s where the Snowheads OktoberTest’s are so handy. You get to test loads of skis and see which you like; even if it’s only a style/type of ski, ie. ones with titanal plates etc. But like you, budget was a major consideration for me. Hence me buying mine in the summer off peak sales. Of course you then have to service your skis, or pay someone to do it. I do my own servicing and find it very therapeutic. Best of luck with your search.

If you can't do the OktoberTest then don't buy for the next holiday but pay the premium to swap skis during your hire, keep swapping until you find the pair you like and then buy the ones that you like when you come home either from Glisshop, Ekosport etc or second hand from Ebay. One thing that is pretty much guaranteed is that in a couple of seasons you will want to sell and upgrade

I am the Proskilab reviews director and can tell you that the Speed Zone 7 is a very good ski, perfect for the intermediate skier who wants to learn carving turns. I would advise you to get a 17/18 version which slightly better in my opinion (and of course cheaper). You can find deals from retailers on Gearscore.co.uk.

Wow, thank you for taking the time to respond to this I have actually done just as you advised  as I came across a deal online just before Xmas for £204.00 for 167cm spzn 07 and yes they are last years model in black and orange, which I preferred anyway, so even better to hear your opinion of the two versions. Can I ask would you advise getting them waxed before use? I don’t have any concerns about the look of the bases just read that some people recommend this on new skis and learning as I go at moment.

Hi John,
Good choice. The new version has a lightened wood core and it seems to me that it has lost a little bit of stiffness. But it is always difficult to compare skis from one year to another. Anyway both versions have been reviewed by Proskilab professional skiers and have won a "Best ski" award.
I think that you can use them right away.

@Jfom, get them waxed in resort. It's generally only about €10 for waxing (in French Alps, anyway) and a decent shop will know which wax is appropriate to local snow conditions. You could even ski a day on them and see how they feel before deciding. They are usually shipped in a "ready to go" state (it might say on your delivery docket).
