Poster: A snowHead

Opening day. Plan Gabba, Yula and Arp open. Piste was nice and grippy, the furthest piste was only open on the upper section then you had to use the cut through.
There is a new, horrible piste from the top of Arp to Yula, with big fence with a few gaps. Now the old lifts are going to be more over stretched than ever!
Powder off the top and round the back of Yula was very nice, need to know where you are going to avoid getting stuck or a very (10km+) long walk.
Even on the lower half of Gabba you were hitting trees and rocks if you are not careful off piste.
Quite a lot of people but not too busy.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

@Idris, a piste off the Arp. I’ll be very interested to see where that goes!
As you say might lead to longer queues. The top section rarely has a queue compared to the bottom.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Maybe somebody is thinking "expansion" in the near future
Think about it, appropriate uphill capacity to the top of Arp ?

Just had a mouch around. Arp and Youla lifts are to be replaced by 2021. There are two pistes now from Arp a red and a black. Havent found where they go!

The red links the two. (Fenced traverse track)
The black starts half way along and goes straight down.
(Just the area you could traverse to skiers right of Yula)

Fresh dust everywhere yesterday, blown there by the forceful wind roaring over Col de la Seigne. Skied off Yula again, Ankle to Knee deep, no tracks around!.
Arp was closed due to wind. The frontside upper Chair was open and pistes that far down officially, but they were not bothered about everyone skiing down to mid station.
A lot more people around, but a lot more skiing.

@Idris, thanks for the report I'm starting to get excited.
I’m still puzzled as to where the arp piste runs, I know the top very well and can’t think how they might have found a route down that wasn’t too steep without a bulldozer.

It is across the face, and yes Bulldozer and Explosives used. Ruins the face as far as Freeride comps go, looks ugly too.
Guessing the new lift will go from Telecabine top to Arp and need this abomination for people to ski down. Would make Yula a great place for a restaurant.

@Idris, thanks again, ARP is one of my favourite places I’ve had great fun from there, I’ll try and not think the worst until I’ve seen it.

It makes sense for the resort. Youla and Arp are way too expensive to man and maintain for the capacity they provide. They can do this within current eco rules as just using existing infrastructure sites.
Nosing around yesterday (the snow was excellent off both) there are a couple of advantages. Firstly, the entry to the face above the ski area below Arp will be accessed from above. This should reduce the amount of traverse lines that ruin the face long before it is skied out. Secondly, there is now a pisted track above Youla heading due west that runs out. This makes access to the bowls a little more pleasant. I think it is a precursor to an itinerary, maybe a piste, to Plan de la Gabba. I do not know this for sure, it just looks to be heading that way. A pisted track low down guiding/assisting skiers back to Plan de la Gabba would always have been a useful addition.
The downside, more people
I suspect the restaurant will be at Arp, or, knowing the Italians, both.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.
