Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Chamrousse 2018/19

Opening day at Chamrousse today with 25cm of packed snow announced at the bottom of the ski runs at 1650 meters. Which doesn't sound like a lot, and well, it isn't, there were a few stones here and there although only the runs marked as "closed" were a problem.

The roads were white from 1200 meters and you really needed snow tires or chains to get into resort. We started over in the Beranger area with the mild Coqs run although we did ski in the snow park a bit for fun. The snow was perfect here. Soft and around 15cm of fresh on a base off piste.

Over in the Recoin sector there were a few more rocks, especially on the Olympic Dames. The Olympic Hommes was good but hard snow - almost like man made although there are no snow canons here. The Lacs Roberts were closed.

There were a lot of ski tourers in the resort climbing the pistes and the nearby summit of le Grand Vans was heavily tracked by the time we left. A bit windy first thing but mildish and sunny by midday. We covered about 4500 meters of vert in the morning and figured that was sufficient for a first day back on skis (at least for the tot).

The area obviously needs some more snow but is quite skiable, even off piste at present. The snow was wind blown on the ridges and summits off piste. Whether next week's thaw will do much damage remains to be seen. Rain is forecast to 2300 meters but how much remains to be seen.

Lift pass price was nice: 13 euros!

24km of runs officially open but you could ski most of the terrain (with care).

FL at 2200 meters today with heavy rain. Well it might consolidate the snowpack Happy.

I probably won't ski much at Chamrousse this season but if anyone wants to contribute their observations / ask questions in this thread feel free.

The Nordic ski area (for anyone who is interested) has joined the alpine area in opening. The nordic area is on a 1600 meter plateau. There is about 30cm of snow at this altitude (so not enough to resist a thaw). Currently not much snow below 1400 meters.
