The Fjern Arktis is approx 150g of down with reasonably small baffles so not as warm as those suggested up thread. It’s also £220 RRP so not that much of a bargain compared to the others suggested.
If money is no object the Arc’teryx down jackets are lovely (I have a Crerium LT I won in a competition) but i’m not sure they are worth the extra money. Often pop up on Sports pursuit if you are sample size.
PHD stuff is great but quite specialist, reasonably expensive (handmade in Stalyvegas) and not the most asthetic. Very light functional kit though. Hopefully they can keep going on the same path since Pete passed away.
I’ve only just noticed you are in Austria. Definitely get down to your local store and get trying on!

@galpinos, yep, Austria, so a fair range available as long as the store in question will ship here (most do, it’s not generally an issue). First line of the op might give you a clue as to why I’m shopping online, though I might hobble in to town at some point (distance is a killer right now). Thanks for your help though.

@Scarlet, Ah, I'd missed that. I guess the returns policy is the most important thing at the moment! My wife broke her foot on our date night at the local "Ninja Park" attempting the warped wall. I hope you have a swift recovery!

@clarky999, current Lyngen looked a bit slimmer/less puffy than yours. Have they changed the design? I was concerned that one wouldn’t give me much extra on the warmth of the ultralight (that orange thing) even though I do prefer the style to the Trollvegen. |
As far as I’m aware the only changes are aesthetic - I think the baffles are sll horizontal now whereas mine has one or two diagonal baffles as ‘design feature’ or something.
It will definitely be warmer than your other one - it’s very much an outerlayer not midlayer - but I can’t say if it will be warm enough for you or not. If warmth is the primary objective I’d probably lean towards the Trollvegen.
Btw, can you get N to drive you to Sport Conrad in Garmisch? They should have loads of deals this weekend.

@DB, I'll be going up Nordkette, not K2! A mate had something similar for his Everest trip last year, and swore it was the best thing ever, but his circumstances were quite specific! I do like Bergfreunde though, and have already purchased two merino items from them this week from their sales
@galpinos, WTF is a warped wall in a ninja park?! A broken foot is unfortunate, but as a date night that sounds awesome! Where can I find this?
@clarky999, Hmmm, he's huffing a bit at the moment coz he's got work to do and had to spend three hours in the hospital with me this morning and then do all the things at home (washing on, lunch, coffee etc.) so maybe I'll wait till later to suggest that...

@Scarlet, I thought you'd have a maid/ butler in that palace of yours in the hills, your former town owner Titus Salt never used to have to do all that stuff himself....no meals on wheels or daily help in IBK?

@Scarlet, It’s an obstacle course a kin to Abuja Warrior UK/American Ninja Warrior. No idea if Austria has an equivalent.

The warped wall is the last obstacle in the course. It’s great fun, though we only had 10 minutes before she broke her foot, then 10 minutes while she “tried to run it off”. It turns out, you can’t run a break off. It’s buggered up her hockey season but it back fully functioning, now just battling to get her place back against all the youngsters.

@Scarlet, You just cost me money.........
This thread made me consider my current jackets and - having debated with myself for all of 5 seconds - went up town and picked up a Rab Electron jacket in Tiso sale.
Fits well, and feels toasty !

May also be worth checking out Norrona's new (or rather, resurrected) spin-off: https://whiteout-getout.com
They say the down jackets are 750 fill power, but I couldn't see the weight of down they've actually used.

@clarky999, interesting idea – I like the sustainability angle, but the styles and colours not so much. Leaning towards the ME Sigma at the moment, though I’m not sure if anywhere closer than Sport Conrad has them to try on. Chance of a discount is high though, and stocks are better than Norrøna or Arcteryx.

L@Scarlet, you've got a lightweight down jacket already so all you need is a low end proper one (e.g. Mountain Equipment Lightline) and wear it over the lightweight one. No need to worry about baffles etc, you'll be roasted. What are you wearing on legs, head, hands, feet? That will make a difference.

@DJL,
That's a fair point. I have an old ME down jacket without a hood that I wear over my lightweight jacket at times. Interesting those times have been standing on a football touchline watching my kids when it is ~zero but the wind is blowing rather than up a mountain

That’s the ladies equivalent of the jacket that Tim Livingstone just took up Latok 1. I think it’ll be warm enough.......

@Themasterpiece, I thought they were a fashion brand? |
I thought the question was for winter jackets for general use (not skiing), but judging by the number of people wearing Fjällraven winter jackets in Sweden and having tried a couple on, they are properly designed and serious winter jackets. With a serious price tag.

So my Christmas present is a lovely warm ME Sigma jacket, purchased online from https://www.trekitt.co.uk in Hereford, as their discounted sterling price was much better than the Euro RRP, even with a courier (no offers about at the moment, and stocks are not so high that I’m prepared to risk waiting). Also, it’s getting cold
Generally, there are a lot of the lightweight ones about (probably more use in the UK anyway), but the more serious jackets of all manufacturers are not widely stocked, and certain sizes are often sold out.

If you really want 'warm', rather than a recognisable mountain brand, you can't go wrong (IMHO) with a Snugpak Softie jacket. I had one (still do, actually) for twenty years in the Army. It took me down to -25 celsius in Bosnia - not exactly in comfort but no-one was comfortable that night! Awesome warmth and less than £100. Not nearly as snazzy as the brands which feature highly in this threat though, and they don't pack down as much as my new Montane number. Don't try to do too much exercise in it though, heat stroke is a risk!
