Poster: A snowHead

have just bought a new set up for winter 2019 hoping to optimise the new shift binding for some lift served touring adventures in BC , so have the new salmon qst 99 mounted with the shift binding and a set of the new G3 alpinist + skins .
the question is can I cut the skins to fit my usual touring ski as well , a Kastle TX98 , which is ever so slightly smaller all round and therefore have one set of skins to suit both skis , I do have a set of skins cut specifically for the Kastle skis but they are more suited to cold dry conditions and not the wetter snow found in BC where the alpinist skins work very well
dimensions ,,
Salomon QST 99 167 cm 134-99-116
Kastle TX 98 168 cm 128-98-117

I have a set of THESE which I purchased in the summer for the plan to use on different skis. Unfortunately I have not used them yet so can’t comment on now good/bad they are but all the reviews I’ve seen have been positive.
Maybe modify one of your current skins by splitting the tip section and trimming the waist and tail to the narrowest dimensions?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Should be no problem, just cut them on one ski then move the skin to the other ski and repeat. They are similar sizes so won’t be an issue.

They’ll be fine.
Just check they’ll fit to both skis properly then trim to the smaller. Check on the other and trim again if necessary. Helps if you have one of those offset trimming tools.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Trim for the Kästle tip/waist first and then for the Salomon tail. i.e. 128-98-116

Should be fine - stick the skin on the smaller ski then lay the ski flat on a board (which you're happy to cut on). Use a sharp scalpel and cut along one edge - then reposition the skin double the width of the metal edge and trim along the other edge.

@altis, g3 comes with the nice trimming tool so that works , was more checking that the 1-2mm extra edge gap that will occur will be ok on the Salomon ski

As others have said, it will be fine - I use a single pair of G3 skins for a 175cm Prior Husume (~102mm), 183cm Katana (~110mm) even up to my 180cm Whitedot Redeemers (~125mm). Sometimes it feels like I'm pushing it a little bit on the Redeemers with respect to grip when on edge, but much more economical than three pairs of skins and much less hassle than putting a slit down the middle (I'd imagine especially during a windy transition on a col!).

agreed , have now cut skins to fit the kastle tx tip to tail and to the exact width , and this works pretty darn close to the sally's so can't see any issues , good to just have one pair to look after as my ski bags are already on the limit with all the bc gear
cheers all for advice
