Warming up over the Dolomites Saturday to Monday, then dropping to just above average remainder of next week
Yesterdays snow amounts across the Dolomites:
Cortina 5cm
Val Gardena 10cm
Alpe Di Siusi 8cm
Val Di Fassa 5cm
Val Di Fiemme 5cm
Obereggen 10cm
Alp Lusia 10cm
Civetta 5cm
NOthing in the other areas (according to SKi Dolomiti website)!!
Alta Badia now at the bottom of the pile for snow depth (mountain) at a paltry 15cm!!! Typical, the one year I decide to go back there, though still got 5 weeks to go!!

In the last few days we’ve skied the SR in both directions, as well as the Seceda/Dantercepies/Ciampinoi areas. There is no shortage of snow on any marked pistes, and I haven’t spotted any unopened for lack of snow either. Yesterday we skied pretty much all of the Ciampinoi/Saslong area in some of the best conditions imaginable - 5-10cm of unpisted fresh snow down the sides of many marked runs. It was delightful. Don’t worry about snow conditions if you’re coming here soon, it’s going to be fine..!

Yes, if you want to ski on perfectly groomed pistes in mostly sunshine, which is what many skiers do, the Dolomites can't be beaten. And if it does happen to snow a bit while you're there, I doubt there would be many complaints either!

Home now but had a splendid week in Corvara. We stayed within the Alta Badia area as our son was in morning ski school but covered pretty much all the open pistes in the region. A few runs and lifts were closed when we were there but the runs themselves looked ready to open for yesterday (I think). As @luigi says above, perfectly groomed pistes in the sunshine pretty much sums up our week.

1023kms open today out of 1200 possible, according to the super Dolomiti app. 417 out of 452 lifts operational. 456kms of connected runs now open around the Sella Massif.
The really good news though is that most of these runs will probably stay open each day until April, barring a big storm from the south or something really massive going right through the Alps.

We are in Selva at the moment, ciampinoi lifts closed due to high winds, we had sleety rain earlier, but that seems to have moved on.

There's been big rain in many resorts on the N & W side of the Alps over the weekend, so count your blessings, though the snowline is falling today in Austria as a cold front comes down from the N.
Mild Foehn wind for Dolomites today, but it's looking a lot calmer, cooler & sunnier for the rest of Xmas week.
The Northerly flow seems to be persisting well into the New Year, so not a lot of fresh on the charts currently for the Dolomites...but maybe it's not such a bad thing!

Not screaming out for snow to be honest, pistes are pretty good and skies cleared about 1.00, so ended up being a great afternoon, although still a blustery wind moving the snow about. All local forecasts confirm tomorrow is another day

First World War tour opens today according to the SD website. There are now 422 lifts out of a possible 452 operational and 1042kms of runs open.
The Alta Badia is still making some snow.
The model output indicates milder than average temperatures over the next week but with pressure staying high it should be calm and sunny. Humidity is low today at 59% and is set to stay low so there shouldn’t be too much snow loss in the weak sun.

Almost a full house now. 1107kms of runs complete and 426 lifts operational. Kronplatz, Arabba, Val Gardena, Val di Fassa and Alta Badia are close to 100% open today.
We know the World Heritage quality landscapes and big interlinked areas are attractive to piste skiers, but it is the way they have responded to their unreliable snowfall that I find most impressive.
They start making snow in the Autumn and open runs from the end of November. Throughout December they progressively open more runs up until everything is available, usually in time for New Year. The season has a more or less definite start date regardless of natural snowfall.
Over the last 40 years they have worked out exactly how much piste depth they need to last the season and how much it costs to produce it.
Their piste maintenance must be greatly simplified by their sheltered position, low avalanche risk and default good visibility.
Customer confidence in their product must be good. Returning visitors will have a high expectation of getting six full days of piste skiing. Since most of the accommodation is down at valley level, travel to and from resort will also tend to be reliable.
Such a highly managed operation must make cash flow predictable which must then make it easier at the bank to finance next years infrastructure spending. Having a lucrative summer business must also be of great benefit.
It is probably no coincidence that Leitner, Techno alpin, and Prinroth, some of the worlds leading lift manufacturers and snow management companies, are located in or near the Dolomites.
As long as they can store sufficient water at the start of the season and pay their electricity bills at the end, they should thrive, up until that fateful day when the climate is no longer quite cold enough. Hopefully that day is some years away yet.

Just about to depart San Cassiano after a fantastic first Dolomites and Italian ski experience. For future family trips i'm a convert. Pistes in great shape all week, never any boilerplate despite some warm sunny days and clear cold nights. Just a nod to snowheads- we booked accomodation (Forcelles) and ski school etc based on recommendations on here and all were top notch.

We are currently on the coach en route to Selva.
Clear sunny weather forecast (the snow keeps coming and going on the forecasts?)and cold enough to keep the snow cannons running at night.
Bit worried about strong winds higher up but will just layer up (and put up with being a bit sweaty in the valleys).
The pistes look decent on the webcams.
Very excited now!

Great days skiing yesterday.
Despite lots of brown fields , the pistes were in pretty decent condition.
Bit busy and queues at the lifts but the infrastructure is slick so they move quickly enough.
Only problem was wind at altitude , sella Ronda was closed between Arabba and Val do Fassa.
Forecast to be wickedly cold weds and Thursday. -16C at the top (-30 with wind chill in 30 kph winds) which sounds too cold to ski to me?

Very little snow forecast now for the first half of January. No recorded snowfall in Alta Badia since 06th December. Other Dolomite areas have fared better. From all the charts Ive looked at, I cant see any signs of a change on the way. Looks like skiing, surrounded by brown fields is going to be the case for a long time to come. Good job they've got the snowmaking virtually perfected as they certainly need it.

We're not there until end of Feb so I expect there will be more natural snow, but I read a thought-provoking article in a recent Alpine Club journal that noted there's enough artificial snow made annually in the Dolomites to pave a highway from Madrid to Munich one-meter deep. The point of the article was that alpine skiing is incredibly unsustainable tourism, which I had to admit is totally on point. To be blunt about it, if it wasn't for the views you might as well go to a snow dome.

@mountainaddict, sustainable in the "environmentally sustainable" sense...i.e. carbon neutral. In other words, having to expend so much energy to make snow, so tens of thousands of people will fly/drive great distances to slide down it, is not particularly green, to say the least. Keep in mind that it is the Alpine Club so they're naturally biased toward climbing and non-lift-served skiing.
Having said all that, you definitely feel as a skier that you're getting your money's worth in the Dolomites...

Heading out there for two weeks in 19/1 .... 45 Irish on tour on week one & the hardcore après specialists there from 26/1
Been there at same time for past ten years and for 8/10 of those had good snow coverage ... The 2/10 we're on perfectly groomed artificial snow !!!

Its amazing how they keep the pistes in such good condition given that the last real snowfall was some weeks ago. As good as Austria last year when it had snowed mere days before we got there.

Goalies Bar. We thought it was expensive and quiet.
The mid twenties contingent in our party have spent a lot of time in Stüa bar and say it is great.
